I think everyone is looking at UAE vs Red Bull, meanwhile Carapaz is just waiting to pounce

I went with Roglic, as that’s who I started with, and I don’t think he is out of it yet. But was very tempted to pick Ciccone, as it is possible his time has come, and I like his team. Pedersen, Konrad, Vacek, and Verona all look like they can contribute/support in different ways.

All will be decided in the last week, as despite all the groaning, this course will deliver meaningful differences. I'm hopeful that some of the stages which appear unfriendly to GC action will actually deliver some interesting tactical situations and some hopefully legendary attacks.

Hard to see past the experience, finishing punch, and power of Roglic. Caveats about crashing out, etc., etc. Ayuso seems like a bit of a head case to me, and while he looks quite strong physically I see him slipping somewhere. Just not a believer. Del Toro shows his mettle and hangs on.

Looks like a great race. Hope I'm totally wrong and the unexpected happens.

  1. Roglič
  2. Del Toro
  3. Ayuso

I voted for Ayuso before the Giro began so sticking with that

I look at the top 10 and think its a very open race in many ways so who knows and isn't that great ...some uncertainty at last

I also think that probably 2 in the top 10 wont be there 2 weeks from now

I am still surprised at the support for Del Toro's credentials to win this Giro ahead of Ayuso and Roglic. We have had only one MTF and that was a bunch sprint for the GC contenders except for Ayuso who took 4 seconds.

The main reason he looks good was his performance on the sterrato stage. Del Toro looked super strong (confirmed by Bernal's post stage comments). But that is a sample of 1 ?

In the ITT stage 2, Del Toro and Ayuso were split by just one second.

Tuesday's TT will tell us more. But with Del Toro he is such an unknown quantity over three weeks. Not saying it can't happen but if he wins this Giro with what is yet to come it would be a big shock. Also remember how Roglic won in 2023 on the penultimate MTT. We know Rogla is good over three weeks.
I don't see it either, but I get that people love to see him win. It's always fun to root for the youngster/underdog.

Del Toro contesting these finishes can tell us he's strong but it can also betray an insecurity on what he knows is coming. But not sure getting a small time bonus today is going to help him on stages 16, 19 or 20. He is such an unknown in grand tours we are all guessing.

What is in Del Toro's favor is the competition. Roglic doesn't look great but then he didn't seem great in 2023 until it really mattered on Lussari.

I don't think it betrays insecurity, I think he's just feeling great and doing what feels natural.

Today he let Ayuso beat him for the bonus seconds, or at least it was going to be VERY close and he backed off. Seems anything but insecure. Just young and having fun out there.

We are all just guessing, but seeing a rider feeling that strong, with such ease and supplesse on the bike...it's hard to ignore. I would still bet on Roglic with even odds, and I hold to my prediction above, but...is anyone really going to be shocked if the kid wins? He has to be dropped. Might happen, there are a lot of cols to climb, but haven't seen it yet. He's been strong on every terrain so far.

Agree with the gist of your post but we really have seen only one proper MTF and it was a bunch sprint by the GC except for Ayuso who took 4 seconds. We know Rogla and others like Bernal should be good on Finestra. We are guessing how Del Toro will fair on the big climbs to come in the 3rd week.

I want it to be Del Toro but it still feels like the sensible bet is Roglic already though it is a concern that he only really has Pellizarri in the form to be a difference maker for a long range attack.
