Del toro at the moment is giving me the same vibe of vingegaard 2021 tdf. Ving had a relatively "ok" winter that year with an average uae tour, win at copa bartali, 2nd itzulia, average dauphine and out of nowhere he become the 2nd best grand tour rider in the tour and we should also remember he wasn't on visma team 1st roster for the tour.

This years del toro progress is giving me the same vibe with a relatively ok but not super spring, he came to this giro like a man possessed. With no one even his team expecting what he is doing at the moment. I think he is the next big thing after pog & ving

Del Toro's young eagerness for the first two weeks will cost him dearly if he gets involved in early excursions with a Carapaz-type excursion, or continues with the quick defense of small dots of 10s here and 15 there in small knuckle punch tests.
I never thought I would write this, but in that company Ayusu looks the most calculating.
I think it was Larry Warbasse who said Ayuso always measures his efforts in this Giro. He has yet to respond to a single attack and he's very often looking at his watts when going uphill. Could be a strategy, yes.

I just can't see del toro faltering with his latest performances. Unless he screws something with the feeding due to getting overexcited. But he's dancing on the pedals covering all these attacks with such ease.
True, but really we have only had one proper MTF and it was unipuerto. Stage 16 we should find out for certain. If he loses no time then yes I think del Toro can win. But if he shows weakness then the sharks will smell blood.

Sadly I fear the Roglic shark has lost some teeth with injury and the route design isn't as testing as it could be either - like stage 19 with the toughest climb in the middle of the stage again? So if he doesn't crack in the next stage I think del Toro's stocks to win this Giro rise substantially.

Big pressure on Ayuso to deliver too. With no Pogacar this was Ayuso's chance but now there is this new kid?

Vingegaard had problems with his achilles tendon before Dauphiné 2021, which hampered his training. So the reason he came relatively out of nowhere is that, in fact, form-wise he was nowhere :) I don't know if Del Toro has had any problems so far this season, I don't think so. His progress can probably just be attributed to him being young and still in full development.

Yes, the same can be said of Vingegaard who was also young back then. In 2020 vuelta he showed some signs of strength then in 2021 tdf fully exploded as the future gt winner. This year deltoros progress is comparable to vingegaard at least from what i've seen so far in this giro.

As others have noted, the third week is so different to the first two weeks, that it’s like the real race only starts tomorrow…

Del Toro obviously has a decent headstart, and he’s looked imperious in week two. But as we’ve seen many times before, being imperious in week two is very different to being imperious in week three. Add to that, the fact that he’s something of an unknown quantity in the types of stages still to come, and that he’ll certainly need his team to support him a lot more than they’ve done in recent days, and I don’t have high confidence that he’ll stay in pink all the way until Rome.

Others like Bernal, Carapaz, Gee have looked sprightly, but have they been trying to force things in week two because they’re not confident for the hardest stages in week three? And have they used up vital energy in their attacks? You wouldn’t have thought so given Carapaz’s & Bernal’s pedigree in the third week of GTs, but they’re also both inconsistent GT riders (for different reasons), while Gee is already putting in a career best performance in the top 5.

Others like Yates, Ayuso, Tiberi, Arensman & Caruso have looked generally solid, but with moments of weakness (or bad luck) that make them hard to pick.

And then theres Roglic, who I can’t quite bring myself to complete count out, despite his obvious problems.

So all of that is to say, I have no idea who to pick! What a tantalising prospect heading into stage 16 😍

Yep, I'm getting the same feeling. I voted Carapaz but that's more wishful thinking than anything else. Del Toro will probably take this.

The best news for the race is that Carapaz and Bernal both have good form and are willing to put it all on the line for victory and not settle for a podium as they have already won the race and only a repeat win matters to them. This could dynamite the race from far out and expose the UAE fractured team dynamics.

No mas Ayuso. Only team politics can save him. I switched away from him and voted for the bull. Isaac can do it. Vamos!

Carapaz and Simon are dangerous. I'm secretly rooting for a Yates  . He has unfinished business in Italy, I still think that he can pull it.

Bernal fanboys rejoice, it's nice to see him in good form but "he ain't goin' nowhere" in this race. Be real...nice to see him ride with the best again.

Caruso vs. Tiberi, it's not quite Nibali vs. Aru in magnitude, but it will be entertaining.

Roglic was The New Rominger, no mas, he's not Mas, but "he's no Remco either"...

I hope that Bardet gets one, for good times sake.
