I think I'd like Schachmann to win this race now ...he impressed today

Also very impressive is del Toro but he is not riding for himself

Guess Ayuso will win
Schachmann was absolutely crushing it today, he looked to be super strong, he had 2,3 hard jumps more in the gas tank than Del Toro, who was also strong, Del Toro just didn't have @2 kilometers in his legs at the end but he still finished great considering that it looked like he popped completely. Super impressed by Max Schachmann he was in the mix for every strong move and looking like he was taking full advantage of Roglic dropping out.. He looked the strongest in my opinion.. I was really pulling for Isaac Del Toro but I loved what the McNulty attack brought to the race, effort used to chase him was critical for the end result and it set up the Del Toro chance.. That last separation w Ayuso, Del Toro and McNulty should have been more fruitful in the stage..Max was doing everything alone!! Impressive

It’s not a double-standard. It’s the fact that I can be BOTH concerned about the riders health the same way I would about any rider who had a bad crash like that and also feel personally disappointed for what it takes away from the enjoyment of watching cycling the next many months. Because feelings don’t adhere to straight lines or exact boundaries, the two feelings get mixed together, and gives this crash greater gravitas in many people’s minds.

If that seems unfeeling or unsympathetic to consider my disappointment in the midst of the riders’ awful injuries, I’m sorry but that same day I saw many images of people with much worse injuries and personal consequences who were in war zones, traffic accidents, etc.
To be accurate, Jay Vine broke his back after crashing into a concrete drainage ditch.. for anyone who doesn't consider that serious, hate to see other life references!! Like Monty Python, were the guy gets his arms and legs cut off and still yelling the guy who did it is a coward, come back and fight!! Collapsed lung is not a paper cut

What are the two standards?

do Kirby and Smith call out the breakaway riders and their DS's for racing for the stage yesterday if those three nobody riders crash? do people think the winner shouldn't be allowed to celebrate their win? does the rest of the peloton refuse to race the rest of the stage? does eurosport/discovery/max pull the replay of the race off of their streaming platforms?

for the record, it would've been completely fine by me if the stage was cancelled once all the ambulances were in use. but save me all the *** drama and the rush to blame someone or something for what happened. it's a bike race and riders crash. the reaction was way over the top, it was as if someone had died.

i fully understand being disappointed! i was very disappointed and still am, this race is basically ruined. hopefully the remaining riders still put on a good race tomorrow.

If Del Toro starts winning big races then you will see these Mexican guys in absolutely huge numbers.

There are a few countries that always have dormant large, super fanatical fan groups that pop up whenever one of their sports stars does well.

Mexico, Turkey, Portugal and god help us if anyone from Serbia emerges.
Mexico only seems moderately insane for Lat-Am standards.

It was the most devastating crash this century. Three of the top four favourites for the Tour were wiped out in one second. Of course the magnitude is heightened infinitely due to the names of the crashed riders. I don't even get what point you're trying to make. Would it be that horrible if in the future such concrete ditches and boulders become cushioned? Of course commentators and fans are more attached to the most well-known riders than three nobodies from continental teams. That's not hypocrosy, that's just a fact.

my point originally was that this was overblown due to the 3 big riders being involved, which essentially you agree with.

as far as it being the most devastating crash this century, that is asinine. a rider was just killed at the tour de suisse less than a year ago.

He has already had an effect in Baja, you see lots more juniors out riding and the guy that coached Isaac from super young, collects all kinds of stuff, he is like a cycling junk man, he gives kids bicycles, clothing, helmets, nothing matches but it's free and young kids really respond and enjoy. I will ask permission to post a picture of Del Toro, probably 9-10 years wearing a pink helmet!!
Del Toro results are a real motivator for young riders..so is Eder Frayer, who rode for Legion, and represented Mexico at the Olympics..all super positive consequences of Mexicans racing bikes at a high level..

I was at the start...friday, not too much people. I ve been there at le Tour and La Vuelta and much more people...and It was like to go toa funeral...everybody was sad and serious. I said something to Landa and Kuss. Kuss was maybe a little bit more optimistic, no so sad like other people, but everybody similar.

I speak with an spanish UCI commisary about Crash...for them is just Riders fault that everybody want to go ahead and before people descent on one straith...maybe, but maybe something is possible to do...at least some corners were ro falll is dangerous, put something to protect, it is no the same to hit an stone than grass. And that corner has both things. Quite dangerous for the speed and with rocks...

For some people was blame of the cyclist than want to go ahead taking risk and some cyclist than started late cycling..but what is the solución? Maybe mine IS no good, but bikes from 20 years ago were less dangerous...Cycling had always crashs, but no like now....every year worse situación, need to stop.

I think I will be tomorrow at Arrate zi always eanted to feel the environment...but no lot of motivation as well without Landa...nice is Kuss try the stage and Ayudo try to get GC, but is very sad

Butiriago's going to blow this race apart tomorrow isn't he? Can feel hard done by about his season so far, and has nothing to lose here. Hindley too, though presumably Bora will try the Schachmann card first. Could be a great day.
i hope to be in all the climbs except Gorla, as I go with my bike...for sure I encourage all those riders if try something from far...Now the wind is brutal in San Sebastián. With 27 degrees at 23:00 h saharian wind...at the time of the race will be less strong, but still important.

Fair enough, that wording was bad. I meant it was the most significant crash sporting-wise.
A perspective I had not really considered too much was put forth by Chris Horner's wife and another today by Jay Vine's wife, were she said something like she thought her husband was dead laying there..
Pretty sobering thoughts about bike racing.
In the US we had a rare moment of solidarity as a young back football player lay on the field lifeless and the American collective wished him life, it worked, didn't last long but it worked!!Thanks Damar Hamlin!!!

Who died, in this most devasting crash this century?
