Actually I am happy for this guy. Some other riders, soccer players, tennis players etc, have gone free of charges, and here we have German and Swiss authorities persecuting this rider.

He only won 1 Tour. Let him have his Glory, especially during a time where most of cyclists were doing the same.

He is even going to get some of his money back:
Swiss Olympic is to bear the costs of the case, and Anti-doping Schweiz must repay Ullrich for his expenses.

Ulrich was one of the best riders we have seen in the past 30 years. He was side lined by a which hunt and parinoid media .

He could do almost anything if he was alowed to Time tria,l Climb, and sprint with the best.

Jeff d'Hont reckons that if everyone was clean, Jan would've won it ten times, he was that good. Interesting, if true, what KL said about his HCT never even verging near 50%, after 2000.

He was found to have blood in the clinic. He must be rather annoyed to see Frank, Valv piti, and AC all enjoying their careers.

but Udo Bolts said Ullrich was dropped like a stone in the hills in the pre-season training camp when he was a 73kg neo, until he was given the epo.

if everyone was clean, chances were Ullrich would not be able to hold wheels when the real grimpeurs went up the road.

It was in the IM conversation between JV and FAnrdreu, with one of them, I think Frankie say 'heck, kevin told me that jan never raced above 42 [HCT] after 2002' or something to that effect

Pre season 1998 - after his tour win - Ullrich put on something like 12 kgs, and started the year at approx 85kgs. He lasted 35kms in his first race & was called everything under the sun by the press including 'unworthy'. That's when he was first nicknamed 'El Gordo'.

There was an article in Cycle Sport in early 1998, with two photos. The two captions read something like 'Flat out in the tour last year" & 'Fat out in Majorca this year".

Amazingly enough, he turned up to the prologue in perfect shape, but one of the theories was that he worked so hard to get the weight off that his performance suffered during the race.

Two punctures at two crucial times didnt help, either.

I take Udo's words with a pinch of salt. Considering how Jan crossed over as a worldchampion amateur on a pretty accidented course, I very much doubted he was dropped as a stone as a neo.

Sure amateur and pro differ and all that, but he was oozing class before he was pro.

The difference with Ullrich is that at some point he should have determined that he was unlikely to beat Armstrong at the TdF so he should target other goals. His sponsors would have stil forced him to do the Tour, but he there was no reason he could not have put his real effort into other races.

There's nothing wrong with having several Giro and Vuelta titles IMO. I mean it seems crazy that Menchov has two Vuelta's and a Giro under his belt, but a lot of better riders have nothing.

I just read that article and had to shake my head in disbelief. Regardless if Jan doped himself to the gills, what does the UCI have to gain by pursuing this case? The man retired and doesn't look like he will ever resume his cycling career. Besides the UCI did effectively kill his career by blacklisting him about the Puerto affair, so haven't they accomplished enough already?
