Any particular reason why Philipsen was given the win in the Saitama criterium? Does he randomly have a big following in Japan or something? Or is it just that it would look weird and way less 'legitimate' if the Champs-Élysées winner was outsprinted by two GC guys?
Saitama Criterium is a race made for sprinters and Philipsen was the stronger fast man in the race.
Like in 2017 where Froome and Barguil tried relentlessly but in the end the Manx Missile beated some locals in fine form in the figure of Fumiyuki Beppu and Yusuke Hatanaka, fearless riders who knew the route like the back of their hands, or like in 2019 when Yukiya Arashiro was the natural winner as the fastest rider of the trio of him, Bernal and Roglic, today Philipsen was the natural winner in this route which favors sprinters attacking with two slow dudes.
The only exception is 2018, when Valverde (despite what the official Saitama Criterium website says, giving the win to Sagan) won in another display of his traditional all or nothing attacking style, carrying in the form from the World Championships to beat Geraint Thomas, Yukiya Arashiro and more importantly, Vincenzo Nibali, who retires without a single podium in Saitama Criterium.
