Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

Page 184 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
This is what I know (and it's not a lot, I'm not a doctor, but it's maybe 'new' as I haven't read it here):
Vingegaard took a very hard blow (I saw this and I immediately knew this would be more than simple fractures).
Vingegaard had a collapsed lung. this either impeded his surgery, or it was a more urgent surgery before the collarbone. So for whatever reason, they couldn't do that surgery any time sooner. They first had to monitor him / treat him for other things that were prioritary.
In any way, this is a major blow not only for this season, but, as could be the case with WvA, it could well be that we will talk about a pre- and post-crash Vingegaard and those are maybe not the same.

I think I read he was in ICU last week (not sure about that), so I wondered if he's still in ICU?

He is not longer in ICU according to different Spanish media. Marca says he is getting better slowly:

https://www.marca.com/ciclismo/2024/04/12/661959cc46163f507a8b4596.html

He is out of the ICU but still have special cares or attention.

When Vingegaard had the surgery it was told that some days in ICU were part of the normal process. So, let's hope everything is fine.

I don't have neither official information nor medical knowledge, but we could consider that the crash hit him more badly than we thought.

It would be a shame not having Vingegaard-Pogacar battle for third time in the Tour, but things don't always go as planned.

Can we have the old thread title back?
Or
Vingo is the next Froome
Or
Vingo is an apple living in a world full of oranges and if he doesn't do his turns of love, he'll go bananas
At extreme caution and protection against more conspiracy theories, but has anyone else noticed @Froome has disappeared almost the same time Vingo has the last day or so??

If it's worse than what Visma is letting on, i'm sure there is a reason. I can only hope his family isn't kept in the dark.
It's not worse, they just never told us how bad his ribs are. I'm guessing it's a similar fracture to what Horner had and he said in his video that he was in ICU for 3-4 days and than another 3-4 days in a privat room. Based on that Jonas should be out shortly, maybe they are just being extra careful.
I also think the fact that they operated his collarbone so quickly means they still want him at TDF and think there is a chance he can make it.

His perents seems very controlling, they were probably told everything but still feel like they need to know more. "His mother Karina is especially depressed and worried, his wife Trine Marie Hansen is also stingy with information," said worried father Klaus in an interview for the Spanish Marco. I feel like Trine told them everything she knows but is not informing them daily and that is not enought for them.

What is known is that Trine was in fact rather hesistant about the whole thing in the beginning.

As for the EB story; feels like their usual sensationalist selves. Making a headline like that, then putting the article behind a pay-wall in order to trick people into signing up.
"the whole thing" meaning ...pro-cycling? doing Itzulia?

His wife is the one trustworthy person in charge of their future. She probably knows how sponsorship and endorsement contracts work, how team pressure should be dealt with and how uncertain a hospital can be in a foreign country under an alien press environment. Less is more for the family and let the fans speculate.

Being in a Spanish hospital this long says more than is not being said. If he was set to travel he'd be back in familiar territory.

Is he still at the hospital? I don’t think visma telling the whole story. Is it not weird still being at the hospital 4 days after a simple collarbone surgery?
He’s going to be in the hospital for at least a week due to needing a chest tube to remove the air from the pneumothorax. After that it’s hard to say. On other patient that aren’t as fit or active as Vinge, they’d have the tube 2-7 days. Then if they want to keep him for monitoring some more days. I can definitely see him taking awhile before strenuous training due to the fractures and lung issues. Both those lung conditions will make it harder to breathe and exert himself. Plus the chest tube is painful with any movement and gets worse the better he gets till it’s removed, then you have to add in the pain that stays once removed.
SHADOW93 explained earlier in the thread. It's the pneumothorax that is the issue, not just a 'simple collarbone surgery'

It’s completely unacceptable noone has contacted them with any updates unless they have no relationship and everyone knows about it. The team should be in contact with them (even if was is comatose).

On the other hand, I’ll never understand why anyone would go to the media with a story like that…
I don’t know how it is elsewhere but in the USA if Vingegaard didn’t want his parents to know his health and status they’d never find out. I would assume other countries have HIPAA laws and regulations. That doesn’t make it any better but if those are his wishes that’s what he wants.

Why does Vingegaard have the same family problems as an 80 year old who is in cognitive decline? I know he‘s very shy but either his condition is worse than reported or this has been going on for some time already.
Nah, not comparable at all. At least he’s able to make decisions for himself. Imagine seeing your next of kin arguing about your resuscitation, living arrangements, etc. and there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s sad how ugly things can get and the frequency guardianship is consulted/requested.

I would assume it’s even stricter elsewhere

Cyclinguptodate is a very low quality website, I don't know why some individuals spam it. That interview with Vingegaard's father was published on 9 April, so it's not really up to date.

I also had a look at the original source, Ekstra Bladet, I'm not Danish, but at first glance it's a rather sensationalist tabloid. So I think whatever is written there should be taken with a pinch of salt.

He may want to keep the press off their backs as well as his. Once he's home and rehabbing he'll have more control of whatever narrative he has to deal with. Remember how many people came to see his public welcome....it looked papal in scope. That's a sh*t ton of pressure to carry!
