Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

“Of course, we would have liked to have Jonas at the start there. That wasn’t possible, but he is definitely on the right track again. It’s true that we’re now looking at what’s possible for him. It depends on when Jonas feels fully fit again and whether we can fit an extra race into his program. But, of course, the Tour preparation remains our absolute priority.”

So he doesn't feel fully fit yet.

“I read in a sports newspaper about all the possible races Jonas could do, but some of those options aren’t even on our calendar. I don’t think we even have enough riders available to suddenly add a new stage race to our program. But there are definitely options if we decide that Jonas needs another race. It has to serve the Tour—that’s the most important thing for us. We are now working on a new plan with his coaches to determine how crucial an extra race would be.”

“It’s always great when Jonas races,” Niermann continued. “Normally, if he participates, it means he is strong enough to compete for the win. That aligns with our goal of winning races. On the other hand, Jonas is our main focus for the summer and the Tour de France. We are also considering him for the Vuelta a España. That means we need to set priorities. We won’t send him to races that would interfere with his altitude training. That’s not how it works. If he does an extra race, it must contribute to his Tour preparation.”

Last year, the Sierra Nevada altitude camp was the three weeks during the Giro. If it's the same this year, I guess a training camp 8 days after Romandie can be done just fine, even if that is not how the team usually prepares for the Tour.

Could that mean the Ardennes Classics or the Tour de Romandie? “We’re looking into it. But we won’t send Jonas to a race at half-strength. If he races, he has to be 100% ready to compete for victory.”

Obviously, that rules out the Ardennes.

I still think he most likely won't race before Dauphiné, but at this point Romandie is really the only option before that.
He also made it pretty clear they are very deliberately avoiding Itzulia.
Only the journalist made that clear, no quote from Niermann about Itzulia.

I think Giro del Trentino would be a good option too.

I agree, it's pretty much Romandie or bust. Mainly because they talk about winning too.

I actually do think he could do very well in Fleche.

Nierman talked to WF. He said Vingegaard is doing fine a this moment, they're thinking about adding races to his schedule. They're thinking about Fleche Wallone and LBL or Romandie.

He also made it pretty clear they are very deliberately avoiding Itzulia.

It makes all the sense doing FW, LBL and Romandie.

Obviously he is not a better one day racer than pogacar, van der poel, or remco, but he can be competitive there.

He is very good in 5 min efforts.

Why are they deciding between LBL and romandi??? Surely he can do both and then go to Teide to prepare the daupgine, then tignes and then tdf. This is a very normal and light schedule in the build to tdf.

Is it written in his contract that he can only do a certain number of races, with his wife's approval? It's like he hate his job
However it is strange to me they are thinking in doing FW and LBL. These 2 races are very hectic and I don't know he is truly prepared to race them after a DNF in PN.

They are afraid he does too much before doing TDF-Vuelta double

I have been critic about him not doing one day races.

There is no reason for not doing FW, LBL and Il Lombardia every year. He can be competitive there.
I think the issue is seasonal planning. When you have a racing block where you go hard on Tirreno and Itzulia, it's hard to still have it for the Ardennes.

I really think for many riders who are supposedly "terrible" at one day races it's mainly a matter of not getting the preperation right for a one day race. The Ardennes are too late in the spring.

Lombardia is similarly very late in the season, and he did try to peak for it, but frankly he looked off in Croatia and I think doing a stage race doesn't help you in 1 day specific planning.

He addresses that as can be read in the quotes in my post: “I read in a sports newspaper about all the possible races Jonas could do, but some of those options aren’t even on our calendar. I don’t think we even have enough riders available to suddenly add a new stage race to our program.”
What do you guys think about Classic Grand Besançon Doubs, Tour de Jura and Tour du Doubs as alternatives to the Ardennes Classics for Vingegaard this year? All three races have a mountain top finish and Visma will take part this year.
