Isn't his wife his manager as well?

It could be just another stereotypical Jerry Maguire "show me the money" sort of pressure applied to the team by insinuating her client isn't happy.

It's during the TdF when offers come rolling in from other teams as well, creating leverage for negotiations.

Just some food for thought.
Probably thats the case. That said, if you want to win the thing - still don’t think its the best timing to stir up the bee’s nest

I agree entirely.

If I'm going to parse through the whole mess and pinpoint the actual 'problematic' part, it's the comments about how the team should ride exclusively for Jonas Vingegaard and not have any secondary objectives that stands out as a red flag; at least in my opinion.

That one is directed at Mr. Wout van Aert himself and is both insulting and equally potentially disruptive.

WVA is a great teammate, like we saw in the Giro and in the past Tours.

Of course.

He did a pull for Vingegaard today as well. It's just there's something you don't do as a manager... and throwing around comments like that in the press is one of them.

It's designed to pressurize WvA into not budging or stepping out of line. I mean she... cracked the whip. Honestly she comes across as a slightly less terrifying version of Miss Trunchbull. Just slightly.

I’m not so sure complaining openly about working too hard, too much time away from home, ignoring anyone else’s ambitions, and potentially retiring early are great selling points for new teams

What everybody seems to be ignoring here is the detrimental effect it would have on the economy if all millionaires started doing their own carpentry!

Very strangely timed interview, and as scribers pointed out not exactly the best PR if you want to convince people to invest in you, if "being a full professional" is to much. And I guess the carpentry thing is maybe even forbidden in the contract (seems to be normal, according to Degenkolb and Bengtsch on ES today), because injury prone activities are not ideal when you're doing sports for a living.

The next question is: who is this directed at? Visma for "making Vingo do this" or Vingegaard himself, for not asserting he needs to do it differently?

Looking from the outside i made some comments in the past on how i feel that likely they are pushing it a bit too far now, at least in some regards and it might become counterproductive.

So Trine voicing such concerns that IMHO didn't came out of the blue.

As for the dedicated GC team, with Rogla this team was more of a team of superstars, with Jonas it's more of a team of Jonas and the anonymous. And even here that 0,5 out of 8 is put under scrutiny, on how that 0,5 is way too much.

So yeah, i must say i noticed this shift too. Here i will say that likely Rogličes legacy in this team is too big, for Trine to achieve her goal. Maybe with completely new riders but the chances for that are rather slim. In some reasonable timeframe. On the contrary if they mess with it too much, then i feel they will end up being a weaker team.

He's under contract for another three years though, so unless he pulls a Roglic and buys off his contract I don't think this is very useful.

It's always dangerous to look at websites like Cyclinguptodate, who just run stuff through Google Translate, to really get a feel for what she's saying, but I don't really understand what she's trying to do here. She can have her concerns, but it seems like she would just rather have a husband who is not a professional cyclist.

Tour time is drama time!

Not sure if the Danes are as blunt as the Dutch? ;)

Honestly, though, she put herself out there as a bit tone deaf. "The team should focus on Jonas ... are you listening Wouty???" I mean, the year van Aert went for the green jersey, he was still an amazing team mate. Or "there are too many altitude camps" (because the world loves it when people don't try as hard).

I wonder if this is all just drama to create attention/press. Silliness :p

The wife wanting the team to go all-in on Vingegaard - it made me think of that beautiful year when the same team had two contenders for the yellow jersey, and they used that against Pogacar. Oh my, that was cycling when it's best. I would love to see that two captain approach used more. Of course, the teams will then have to have two strong Grand Tour guys.

Honestly, I'd rather have one GC contender per team and more teams with GC contenders. But I realize that this a fantasy.

Jonas wife is right. If Visma doesn't dedicate themselves fully for Jonas then he could potentially go empty handed with 0 grand tours in 2 seasons. If Visma let's other riders chase their own ambitions that means they think Vingegaard is inferior to Pogacar.

We haven't forgotten the clown show of Wout when he lost a 3 vs 1 to Powless. He has had plenty of chances to 'chase ambitions' in the spring but he failed, now it's time to solely work for Jonas.

Because some people get slightly angsty when we respond to wife/family interviews (judging by the main race day thread, although Patrick Evenepoel always seems like fair game), I'll approach this from a "she's his manager" standpoint:

- fans and commentators for a few years now have been handwaving Vingegaard's "less than perfect" spring races like Paris-Nice precisely because... he hadn't been to altitude yet. So pretty much everyone can agree than Jonas Vingegaard as a rider is much, much better after altitude training - hence why he has a monster peak in the Tour.

So as his manager, I have no idea what she's saying about his needs (I almost typed 'special' there but retracted at the last second) because as an onlooker seeing this rider race for 5 yeas now, I can say she's totally wrong.

Vingegaard needs altitude training to be at his best, not DIY carpentry at home.
