Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

He was a bit lucky that Pogi tanked the year with the route most favouring the Slovenian.

If he gets a route next year more like 2022, but without any cobbles, Pogi will need to step up from even his best days.
I wonder how much their level was different from 2022. Last year I thought at times Vingegaard could ahve dropped Pog more often, this year I haven't thought that much. I doubt 2023 Pog vs Ving would be as close on finishes like Peyragudes and PdbF.

I also wonder how much Pogs TT was down to having a bad day at that moment and bad preperation, but considering Vingegaard also beat Pog in the final ITT in 2021, I think he's simply a better ITTer at this point. I like Vingegaard a lot more for the final ITT next year than I like Pog.

I think Pogi evidently stepped up. The same power that crushes Van der Poel on Kwaremont also translates to a proper gap opening up when he surges in the final km of a mountain.

Loze is so atypical that it's a bit difficult to compare with Granon and Hautacam.

What is this passion you talk about if it wasn't displayed on Finestre?
I think the issue with the likes of Armstrong, Froome and Vingegaard is that they have such a robotic like team behind them.

Pogacar, Pantani and Contador are more individualistic and attack impulsively which makes them more appealing to the fans.

I doubt that the likes of Froome or Vingegaard lack passion for the sport. They are(were) insanely passionate and dedicated to their craft.

I honestly think Vingegaard was also a bit worse in the middle stretch of the Tour. He responded fairly easily today.

Today unironically looked the most like 2022.

Next years route by the rumors, will suit even better for vingegaard. The last TT is perfect for him, the finish in couillole is nice for him, and there's a strong rumor of a return of the plateau de beille. I also bet that col de portet and ventoux will comeback to the tour.

They were almost equally strong on climbs during first two weeks this year. Pog maybe even took a step ahead compared to the last year while Vinge was similar. As for the TT, the best Pog would surely be closer but still I think he would have probably trailed the GC by a 30-40 seconds after it (possible to overcome but difficult esp. on Loze). Other than Loze (which seems associated with not enough preparation for a 3-week race), I'm wondering why he was weaker on stage 5. It's hard to explain, no excuses there, simply not good enough.

In this event Jonas has been the better ITTer because he was totally prepared. The amount of time he took on everyone during the first half of the TT proved he knew the course and equipment better than the others.
I agree he appeared to have the ability to attack Pogacar more often than he did but he showed discipline that paid off. It's a hard lesson to learn and his team fit in well with the planning.
The predictions of his team exhausting themselves before week 3 didn't pan out. Jonas had support at every key point. UAE did very well, too. I still think you add one more serious contender to the mix and it'll be wilder and less predictable. At the same time no other team comes to mind.

I enjoyed the passion and drama of this Tour. Lot's of new heroics by young riders and resurrections of mature riders that are soon to be retired. Great! If Sagan wins the final stage it'll be unreal.

I think he paid a bit in the middle of the race, the effort that he did on tourmalet. He should had stop after seeing that he couldn't drop pogacar on that moment. I also think Jumbo's tatics on that day were wrong. They just made the race hard in the last 4 km of tourmalet. They should had start to make the race hard on aspin.

Jumbo are nothing like Sky or US Postal. They've made the race in this Tour, not Pogacar. He has trusted on his acceleration in the final of climbs to create a gap. If it weren't for Jumbo we'd have seen a very controlled race where Pogi would have sprinted to bonus seconds on every climb.

What was his plan today? I have no clue.

He won the race, I guess, but today's showing was very weird.

To stare at Tadej Pogačar, a lot. In fact it was so obvious & awkward, even Rob Hatch veered off-script & had a little laugh with a "Vingegaard must look over his shoulder before bed to see if Pog is there!" flippant remark.

Honestly, I have no idea what he was doing. He had 7 minutes to play with & could at least have put in a little attack at the end. I have no idea why he was marking Pog so tightly.

Great athlete, but, just like Froome, he displays very little passion and cycling joy. It's easy to respect him, but less easy to become a fan.
i wasn’t a Pogacar fan until after Granon. Remco won me over after his horrible crash. Froome was harder to like but Finestre helped. Maybe Vingegaard needs some adversity?

Re “passion and joy,” he’s just not really a guy who emotes a lot, but it’s really sweet how he interacts with his wife and daughter.

Talking about the support by his team to vingegaard in this tour, in my opinion everything was not perfect. The team did a good job in general, but i think they missed in the team another good climber to make the race hard before kuss.
Kuss needed more rest after doing the Giro, not to ride for GC as well. Kelderman has been disappointing, but he also didn't have a great prep. I think both will be stronger in next year's Tour. I hope Valter will replace Benoot.
