Surprised that Vingegaard is doing the Vuelta. Last year, he had problems beating 19 year old Onley after the Tour, so Jumbo must have upped his preparation.

He wouldn't be going otherwise. Even the messaging would be different (they'd downplay his chances) because here he clearly says "co leader".

Vingegaard is a top GT star now. These guys don't race GT's just to ride support or not in condition to win.

He will be in a form where he can compete for the win, sure. But absolute top form? I don't see that.

Actually for vineggard (and also pogacar) it's the perfect year to try tour and la vuelta double. There is an extra week between tour and vuelta, usually it's 4 weeks but this year 5, so it gives an extra week to do a training camp after some post-tdf rest.

And also for vinegaard , roglic will take the pressure off. He had his most dominant season, winning itzulia, dauphine and tour, he doesn't have to prove anything, he can try what it's like to go for 2 grand tours on a season without the pressure of the expectations of teams and fans on his shoulder. The team should focus on roglic.

It took froome several seasons to perfect the tour-vuelta preparation and do the double.

I had completely forgot Angliru. I wonder how Vingegaard goes there.

The stages in the Pyrenees are right down his alley. If he's close to this level in the Tour, he should win.

He has had adversity, without it he might have been able to challenge for 3 Tour wins rather than 2. Remember he crashed on the stage where Pogi won the Tour in 2021, and after that he only gained time on him. Plus he went into that Tour as a domestique, but his leader crashed out. And he had a hampered prep due to injury, a bit like Pog this year.

Vinge in the third week gained 12 seconds on Pog thanks to Pog going easier in the TT because he was ahead by over 5 mins. Vinge just would have lost by 1-2 mins instead of 5.

Can only imagine Vinge starts doing two GTs a year now and if he wins Vuelta I could see him starting the Giro next year for the sweep.

I think they are trying to test his limits see how he goes in a 2nd GT. I would say he would be physically and mentally tired after TDF but considering he is in the topmost level, it is difficult to predict. This would be sort of an insurance in case Roglic retires and Jonas fails in the TDF. But i dont expect anything monumental from him since he has no pressure. He may even support Roglic.

He was a beast on the lower/middle slope of angliru in 2020 as a domestique for Roglic. In fact that's where he first caught my attention.

I think mental fatigue is likely to be a bigger factor than physical stress for Vingegaard with his personal characteristics and that will be helped by the team not being reliant on him being fully functioning.

For the sake of the race not being a procession we need him to be a bit vulnerable but hopefully not so much as to discourage future double attempts.

This will show if he can truly be the new Froome.

There are two MTFs in the first week, I think that's going to be good for JV so they will get an early idea of how Roglic and Vingegaard are doing.

Overall I think it PN Vingegaard shows up we have a race, if he is just a bit of the Tour form, maybe without the spikes in performance he had in stage 5 and 16 of the tour, I don't know if he can be beaten. Because where would that happen? Bonus seconds? The TT by Remco?

In this day and age you have to strike while the iron is hot so makes sense to do the Vuelta. I do suspect they’ll go in with Roglic being the true #1 and more of a wait and see attitude with Vingegaard.

I'm sure Pogacar would have loved to win that time trial and went all out. Maybe he eased off a bit towards the end, when he could see he couldn't win, but Jonas was already beating him in the intermediates. Soft pedalling is not Pogis style.

Eisel basically is of the opinion that Vingegaard rides the Vuelta out of boredom and will be unmotivated to do serious training at altitude for example. I wonder where gets that idea from. Odd take.

Rog fans don't have to be worried about vingegaard. If roglic is going to be in better shape than Vingegaard in the vuelta(that's the most likely situation), Vingegaard will gladly work for him.

Yes, clear the last two years of Vinge beating him before sitting up last year and this year very, very soundly. But everyone keeps pointing to 2021 forgetting how far behind Vinge was and that he didn’t gain any time besides the final TT. Vinge didn’t come in as the best and a beast till 2022.
