Judges Decision?

I had an interaction the other day and I need a sanity check on it.

I'm riding up a pretty straight one lane fire road and am coming up on two riders, side-by-side. The riders are creeping up the hill, neither one keeping a line with not enough room to pass on either side given their wiggly lines. I ride through the middle at a much higher pace, and call out nicely that I'm coming through. Neither one changes course.

I touch the guy's hip on the right, and the guy on the left sways into my line while telling me
"That's not cool!" So, I give him a gentle push left (he's got room, I don't) so I can pedal through without all three of us going down and apologize just to be nice about it. He's still grumbling as I pull away.

Judges decision: Am I the bad guy in this scenario?

Not cool seems appropriate. The fact that you clipped the dude may edge you slightly up the scale beyond not cool.

In front has the right of way. Going up has the right of way over going down.
In a perfect world the slow move over to let the faster pass but until they move they have the right of way. You are obliged to pass widely and safely and wait until you can. You didn't, not cool. Understandable but not cool since you obviously made contact.
I hardly doubt you wouldn't post from the butted and battered perspective if a car passed you like this.
Cyclist always suffer from the disparity in skills and engines. Unlike autos we cannot all go the speed limit. Skilled and stronger riders forget that their strength and skill is not common. I think we would all agree that those two might need some sensitivity training and should have been aware of your impending pass as well as aligned them selves to allow an easy pass.

most guys will move if you give them ample warning. you probably yelled right when you were on top of them and then forced your way through the middle. i say forced because you could see they weren't expecting you.

good thing you didn't catch a backhand.

No, they got a heads-up. They didn't move. I would be in the wrong, no question, if I didn't give a heads up.

JRTinma, I gave the guy on the left a gentle push at the hip. I don't think that is the definition of clipping. I'm used to being pushed like that in a field so it didn't seem like a big deal. Maybe it is though.

was this a race? i dunno man. if some guy pushed between me and a friend and puts his hand on me i'm not going to be too happy about it (obviously they weren't).

Given the way you described how these guys were riding, clearly they wouldn't have been used to being pushed as if they were in any sort of "field". Definitely not cool to put your hands on the guy, even if they were experienced riders.

What's all the touching crap about? Keep your hands to yourself. Just pass them and stop being so melodramatic.

Many times. Have you ever had another rider dig a couple of fingers into your iliac crest and use you as a slingshot? You've never been pushed out of position in a field? No one has ever ridden up behind you and touch you on the hip to let you know they are there? Really?

I'm a crosser, in cross this is acceptable. On a mtn bike its not at all. I did masters worlds in Belgium a few times and was shocked how much more contact is acceptable. Maybe this is a regional thing, in the US it would be uncool.

seems a little excessive for a casual ride really. somehow you could have waited a bit I am sure

I say you should be regulated to the bunch for taking you hand off the bars. as for touching a male hip I leave that for the others
