Of course we are not convinced by Alaphalippe because he's not in 100% condition - As some have posted he's a chance to win a stage at the Vuelta if he rides into the race - You have no idea about Chaves - Dauphine and the TDF were training rides HOPING he would have form for the Vuelta.

So, if i have no idea, how do you explain that Chaves was better in the Dauphine than in the TDF, if not for the mental aspect ? And than he is so much better in the Vuelta only 3 weeks later after being gruppetto on every single mountain stage in the Tour bar the first week without any signs of improvement ?

And i am not convinced by Julian because he doesn't seems better than in Burgos right now, not because he isn't at 100%.

No two riders are alike. Comparing different injuries, circumstances always lead to...opinions. Yours is as good as mine.

With regards to Alaphilippe, he be competitive on muritos, reduced bunch sprints, breakaways. That's quite a few opportunities. The odds are good that he'll get one.

Agree.

from http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/vuelta-a-espana-alaphilippe-not-yet-100-per-cent-but-feeling-very-good/
Julian Alaphilippe admits he is not yet back to 100 per cent fitness following his long injury lay-off, but says he's not far off as his comeback continues with an encouraging start to the Vuelta a Espana.
He has played his part in two stage wins for his Quick Step Floor team in the space of the Vuelta's first four days.
Firstly, on stage 2, he was the instigator of the late split that led to Yves Lampaert's solo victory, and on Tuesday's stage 4 he took control in the final couple of kilometres to join Lampaert in leading Matteo Trentin to victory.
...

The question I have is why is he doing so much work on stage 2 & 4? He used up a lot energy helping his team mate to win 2 stages while he is not yet 100% on form. Today, Julian finished 7th while Lampaert &Trentin finished 155th & 160th, about 11 minutes behind Julian. The point I try to make is that Julian can't work on sprinter stage then also expect to win on stage like today.

Through QSF press release regarding today’s race:
"If you don't try, you never win, and today I wanted to try something. I am still easing back into racing, so I wanted to see how far I could go on this stage which normally would have suited me. I'm not satisfied with the result, but I'm happy with the legs, because I could feel that I'm slowly getting into shape, and this is the positive thing I'll take from this stage", said Julian, who remained confident other opportunities will come, for both him and the team. "We've had a really good Vuelta so far and I'm sure we will get many other good results if we keep riding like this."

Quick step is here to win stages - Alaphilippe will have to help others even though he might have personal ambitions. So far it's been worth it. They've got two stage wins. From a team perspective, it doesn't matter if he's burning himself up on the flats, as long as someone is winning. If he was sacrificing himself for nothing, you could say it was a waste. That's not the case right now.

All that said, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that he's working for the team. He hasn't raced that much this year....I doubt he's gonna burn himself out helping the team some in the early parts of the race. Trentin won't be going for stage wins that much.

He wasn't strong enough to win stage in the first stages, so it was best for the team to work for its teammates, with success ! And Quick-Step will reward him by allowing to take breakaways like yesterday.
Oddly today's stage is much more fitted to its current state than yesterday's. At the moment he can't in a murito even in a break, but he could win a breakaway sprint. So he may try again to take the breakaway today.

I can't really see him win this. If he opens a gap on the hill, he will always have a better sprinter with him (sagan, gva, kwiato ...). I have more hope for Gallopin for the French as he is a bit underestimated and could sneak away more easily

That is a possibility, Gallopin said he has been preparing for WC all season.

Don't forget, Julian always does well when he wears the french jersey. He was 4th at Rio's Olympics, and finished 2nd at 2016 European Championship behind Segan.

Good luck to the french team.

Re: Julian Alaphilippe

That's not what i meant. The Italians started riding only after Moscon was dropped. That was probably decisive. Before that a sole Dane was working in the peloton.

Yeah well, the Danes would've closed it anyway if Ala had to wait for Moscon anyway. It's all pointless. Plus I heard there were even a lot of attacks in the final 3km we didn't see, because the camera's were out.
His biggest mistake was to drop Moscon in the cobbles. Had they kept going, Bettiol and Trentin would have stopped the group. I don't see the need for him to arrive solo when he is clearly faster than Moscon. Bad mistake.

So much for the "wheelsucker" Alaphilippe. So many people were critical of him during the Vuelta, but here he put in the strongest and most decisive attack all race. Hate that term being thrown around loosely. Reserve it for a rider like Leipheimer...

Alaphilippe WC#2017 can be summed up with these 2 photos:
1. Salmon Hill attack

2. Got caught with ~1.5km to the finish line, still have enough to sprint with the group and finished 10th.
From @alafpolak twitter:
Inevitably a little disappointed with the result, but no regrets after giving everything. A big thank you to the France team # Bergen2017
