This is the image of our world that I have been brought up with and trusted. Until I thought 'it makes no sense' Our world is a sphere and can not easily be placed on a flat map where distance across at equator is the same as at near the poles.
Then I realised Africa at the equator is depicted much smaller and Greenland/Europe etc nearer the pole are shown much bigger to fit!

Bunch of different map formats for variety of reasons, for centuries so world would fit on flat paper maps.
