I have driven 2 and ridden in another half dozen modified Mazdas that have this power plant...wow.. They do crazy cool things. Why are or were they so unreliable? Really fun.

i don't know if mazdas in general are unreliable, but the one of the problems with the rotary engine is in the sealing required to maintain compression. also, some mazda owners are not aware that the engine is designed to burn a small amount of oil in order to increase the life of the seals. if the oil is not topped up regularly, it decreases the life of the engine.

mazda has gone as far as it can go with the engineering of this engine so they are planning to stop manufacturing it.
