To be fair, last year, he had been similar other than a couple of good results in Mallorca. In 2011 he DNFed every stage race but one (País Vasco, where he was an irrelevance) until June (he finished the Tour de Slovénie), and didn't add anything to his CQ tally except the 5 for finishing País Vasco between February and the Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia, a week from the end of July.

So he could be OK, but he could just as easily be going at 2010-vintage levels of unmotivated, unhappy struggling.

Yeh but he is focusing on the tour this year as opposed to the Vuelta so he should be performing a bit better than last year where he had an extra 2 months.

Thanks. Figured it would be you or Libertine who'd respond. So is this an U-23 race?

Yes, a U23 race in the Basque Country. One of the most important U23 races on the Iberian peninsula.

Last year Lokosphinx absolutely destroyed the race with Shalunov, Ershov, Belykh, Shveshnikov and co. This year they only had Rybalkin and Ptashkin. Which was enough to destroy the competition again. The course had been redesigned (no more MTF, shorter stages), but nothing could stop the Russians from dominating here.

Results Rogaland GP (1.1):

1. Antonio Piedra (Caja Rural)
2. Sep Vanmarcke (Garmin-Barracuda)
3. Simon Clarke (Australia)

Piedra somehow managed to hold on from a charging peloton after being in the breakaway all day, even if he only had 1 minute with 30 k to go. Sep Vanmarcke was by far the strongest from the peloton on the cobbled climbs in the finale. There will be highlights tomorrow on Norwegian TV2.

Little bit off topic but on Wednesday (16.05) starts the Flèche du Sud (2.2), an amateur race with usually pretty good competition.

How did Rebellin end up there anyway? Was that really the biggest paycheck he could get?

lots of teams wanted him but those teams received a red light from uci.
so it was only miche, christina watches and meridiana left.yes i'm sure he really cares about the paycheck from tour of whatever.the guy just is obsessed with the spririt of competition.
he should now take the overall, tamouridis is dangerous though

Pretty much everyone you'd expect is there, Totschnig and Pliuschin noteable absentees from the first group. Great mix of has-beens, didn't-quite-make-its and up-and-comers. Usually they did a prologue but this year they did an 80 km criterium type race in laps. Already looking forward to the next stages

I meant the paycheck from the team, doubt he went there for the rich schedule of races. But you may well be right, maybe it is the highest level team he could sign for because of reasons outside of his control. Which is a shame.
