Even before the recent downturn over the last few years, the post-Ardennes Spanish races had some pretty shoddy and/or suspect fields whereas those before them had some strong fields as prep races. For many years the GC of the Vuelta a Asturias was a byword for dubiousness.

Anyways, great to see the young Postobon-riders. Their jersey are also top-notch, after Euskaltel is no more and the Movistar-jersey has gotten pretty mediocre lately, they easily have the best jersey around! And Carapaz is a real gem, isn't he, will be interesting to see as you noted LF if he will be selected for the Vuelta. Quintana will leave a space open... I don't think he will for some reason tho.

Two things:
1)Why hasn't Trofimov raced for Caja Rural nd suddenly competes in a minor race on home soil?
2) Why on earth is GP Lugano HC? That must be the easiest points available? Good on Filosi to finally get a result though.

I don't know for sure but I read (maybe here) a month or two ago that Trofimov had visa issues, which would tally with him riding in Russia.

Seems to be between Weening, Gerrans and EBH for GC - Stage 5 should create gaps.

Berner Rundfahrt TOP-5

1. Filippo Fortin
2. Bram Welten
3. Fabian Lienhard
4. Jasper Philipsen
5. Lucas Spengler

Fortin won bunch kick ahead of Welten, who's been sprinting pretty well this season. Also Philipsen has to be mentioned as well, he's one to watch in the future. Both are riding inc. Paris-Roubaix U23, where BMC Devo Team are lining up pretty sick team overall - could end up with two of their guys on podium if all goes well. Young BMC boys are having a great time at the moment, Pavel Sivakov is leading Ronde de l'Isard and will most likely win the overall there.

Second stage. And WTF even if that's a ****** 2.1 race in Spain.
Hivert has periodically shown an ability to climb, though managing to best Rosón and Carapaz is surprising for sure.

It's sad to see Castilla y León now, it's the weakest of those Spanish 2.1 races when less than 10 years ago it was a pretty serious race and one of the more prestigious races at that .1 level not just in Spain but anywhere. He was more attentive when it broke up yesterday so had a bit of a GC headstart on the others too.

Roson is coming off a rest period, so he's probably not in top shape. He was knackered after the heavy spring schedule.

Hivert showed himself to be in superb shape in Yorkshire, so while today's result is surprising, it's not that surprising.

It gave me a sight I will forever treasure as absurd. Zabriskie attacking in the mountains, being pulled back by mountain domestique (and reigning TdF winner) Contador working for a teammate

Wasn't that in 2009? Contador was reigning Giro and Vuelta winner then

You're right I had the year off by one

Cyclingnews Forum favourite Simon Gerrans just stopped the bunch on the last lap of the last stage of the Tour of Norway so EBH could reenter after a crash. Hagen went on to win the stage and finished 1st on GC due to bonus seconds. Gerrans was 2nd on the stage and finished 2nd on GC. Weening went from 1st to 3rd.

Bad persons will say that Gerro wanted EBH wheel for the final sprint.

Nicolai Brochner Nielsen (Riwal Cycling) won the opening stage of the Ras. He seems like an interesting prospect - he has won four UCI ranked races in four countries in four weeks.
