Kiriyenka was quite a bit stronger than Henao today I reckon. He was downright scary while Henao clearly was under par.
I understand why Movistar was contend with letting 3 good lieutenants ride for their own, but its pretty obvious that if you really want to win, you go all out for Valverde. No way Soler is beating Yates or Henao on a parcours like this.

How did Yates pull out 40 seconds on that group? I started watching when he had that lead. They showed a replay of his attack, but I'm still not sure what happened in between. Did he get that lead uphill?

His brother got the win at San Sebastián in similar circumstances, though then it was a really top quality group that botched the chase.

A very strong ride by S.Yates - Attacked at 27km and then marked by G.Izagirre - Group comes back together and then Yates attacks on the last climb - Interesting that he has is a late replacement for Adam in Pais Vasco - Think Adam so far is riding a bit better but they are both in decent form.

GVA might have been in the shake up if he hadn't been hit by a motorbike, but that would have depended on him managing to hold on to a Yates who was rapidly closing on him on the climb. He might have done, he might not have done. If he does, then he is a favourite in a two up sprint. If he doesn't, then he's one more guy looking at the other guys in the chase group.
Once Yates was clear, his win depended on the group behind not working together. Nobody holds off a group that strong that actually cooperates in those circumstances. It was one of the most embarrassingly bad chases by a super high quality group I've seen in a long time.

There was a point on the descent when Carlos Verona ended up on the front of the chase group and freewheeled, and the rest of the group just looked at each other.
