Article 7 Bis • STAGES SELECTED FOR “IN-RACE COMMUNICATION” RESTRICTIONS As approved by the UCI Steering Committee regarding the race communication protocol for the 2024 season dated 12 June 2024 the following stages have been selected to test “in-race communication” restrictions:
1st Stage on 05/08/2024: riders are not authorised to use earpieces.
Stage 5 on 09/08/2024: two riders per team are authorised to use earpieces.

It was a disaster for Ewan. Had none of Jayco's lead out riders in Stewart, Walscheid or Mezgec at the race. The team with Englehardt, Quick and Scotson should have been able to get him into position, but in the last 10kms the team was nowhere. he could have finished 4th or 5th, hovever he sat up in the last 30 metres. Bigger worry is that Ewan is riding the Vuelta with so few sprint stages.

Studying the parcours of Burgos shows that it's an unbalanced route. The climbing is limited which is interspersed with an 18.5km ITT.

Looking at how poorly he performed with a monster train at the giro I can understand the team...

At the end of the day, the team should have done better. Watch the last 10kms and you'll see how bad they performed. The reality for the team, is that there is little in this route to allow them to win a stage or achieve a good GC.

Its kinda shite, all they needed to was include the Picon Blanco stage instead of stage 5 and they are golden. But maybe they decided against it due to San Sebastian being one day later so attract more riders also riding in the Basque Country. But nothing wrong with once in a while also catering to strong TT'ers, especially because its only been climbing lately in the race. But a bit boring not to have Picon Blanco, and also weird because the climb actually features in this year's Vuelta.

The San Sebastian reason is probably a good one, but still there's a difference between catering to TT riders and just making the TT decide almost everything, definitely in a stage race where usually the more pure climbers are preparing the Vuelta, not TT guys. There's like 3 climbers who can TT. Kinda makes it stupid.
