The fact that the Italian NT with all the guys who'll ride the Olympics bar Nibali (and Caruso, but he rides this race for Bahrain) still ride this race despite it having 5 stages and only starting today is mindblowing.
What a nice way to ruin your potential advantage of tavelling to Tokyo earlier so that you have more time to deal with the jetlag and to acclimatise. Talk about ruining your chances yourself...

At least Ganna, Scartezzini and Viviani especially have more time to prepare.

Barnabas Peak's second place in a sprint finish is one of the more bizarre results in 2021 - He's struggled in his two years in the WT. He's shown little form , while struggling in his natural terrain as a punchy type rider.

That was close.
Milan is a good TTer who packs a good sprint. In the u23 ranks he was able to go toe to toe with Jordi Meeus and Jake Steward. Since the cobbled classics he has pretty much only done track specific work for the Olympics.
He could become a guy for the cobbled classics.

If you exclude Ackermann, in that top 10 only Vanmarcke has some previous top 10 in mass sprint stages.

Finally the Bahrain flight has taken Milan on board! Good for my cq-points...
That's good also for the team pursuit competition at the Olympics that otherwise for Italy would have been Ganna riding an individual pursuit while carrying three useless wagons.

Not really, Lamon is really explosive (3rd place in the 1km at the EC without being a pure specialist), so they already have one guy who is great for the start, Ganna's biggest weakness. Milan himself is also an impressive IP rider for his age.
It's not that Italy is weak, it's just that the competition in the TP is that good (the Danes, NZ, Australia and the UK)

The better execution is steadily rising the pace, an explosive start just kill the legs to the others.

So... am I right that there will be no coverage of Wallonie?
Don't they realise they have a public service duty to help us deal with our withdrawal issues?
