Lesser known races thread 2022

About 30 riders left in the peloton in Slovakia, Caja Rural and Kern Pharma controlling the group with plenty of Quickstep (no Vernon, unsurprisingly), Jumbo and Bardiani left. Kirby is taking about wild boar, which should tell you enough about how the racing has died down for now as we wait for the final circuit.

Hopefully Australia is close enough for Black Spoke to go to Tour Down Under and that Cadel Evans race. They probably won't get a lot of WT invites next season, but hopefully a few more than just those two Australian races.

The TDU operates on the 18 WT teams and one Aussie development team, so no Black Spoke - Gee if Bike Exchange are relegated then the organisers will have to convince the UCI to give an extra spot - Black Spoke will be a chance for the Cadel Evans race as usually two or three of the WT teams miss the race - They will get a spot if the Herald Sun Tour is on the calendar.

TDU could invite more teams if they wanted to, right? Drapac were always there before being subsumed by Vaughters.

He was in very good shape at the end of the Tour. In fact he was in very good shape at the beginning of the Tour.
His performance was very good at the end.
Gosh, who knows what happened with him! the team said he was ill the second week.
Even in the beginning and in the end of the tour his performances had been at a much lower level then this spring. He won Pais Vasco and at Paris-Nice a puncture stopped him and he still managed to be 3rd in the end. In May I saw him as 3rd or 4th best GC rider for the tour. In Suisse his level had already been at a lower level. It´s good to see him back..

yeah, pretty sure the only reason they didn't have more teams so far is money. Now they also need to invite those two mandatory wildcard teams on top.

edit: here's an older statement from Turtur about it:

There are many high quality international Pro Continental teams, but our budget restricts us in the number of teams we can have start and there are also other considerations with the hotel and tour village in terms of logistics and number of teams we can handle,” Turtur said. “It is not just a matter of making a decision based on a quality team and giving them a wildcard. There are a lot of other considerations that need to be made, especially when it comes to budgeting and also logistics.” [...]

Our policy is that if there is a Pro Continental team registered in Australia that we would wildcard them without question,” he said. “If we have more than one, the higher ranked team of the two will get the wildcard. That is our policy and that is what we have in place now. That goes without saying if we did have another Australian team they would be wildcarded. No problem.”

The best performances that we've seen by Dani Martinez this spring are IMO clearly better than what Thomas showed at the Tour...

as mentioned above, they can invite more teams, though, and now they also must.

This was also the case in 2020 of course, but Total didn't come.

I previously posted that Bike Exchange will get an invite - I am trying to find out if the oldest tour the Herald Sun Tour will resume after the COVID break - Its a good ending to the Australian Summer of Cycling.

yeah, but they also need to invite the two top scoring pro teams from 2022 now, no matter where they are from - that's what I meant to say. So only allowing one wildcard is not an option anymore.

But this probably won't help Bolton indeed, unless Lotto & Total (or whoever ends up top) decides not to accept the invitation.

Don't think Total would go. Lotto probably will as they have 3 Australians in the teams and has been succesfull there in the past.

Two of the most successful Italian cyclists turned pro in august 1992. One of them died of a drug overdose almost 20 years ago, and one of them is riding the race commemorating the first rider. Probably about three quarters of the Peloton on Saturday weren’t even born back then. I simply can‘t stop marveling at how old Rebellin is.

I wonder if a WT team will try to poach Ryan from the Jumbo development team for 2023, seeing that he is at WT level.

yeah, if you are 20 and come fourth at avenir and then immediately after you win a stage of your first race moonlighting with a WT team from their development squad, you are a pretty obvious WT level guy. You can’t know how much further any talent will develop. Maybe he never improves a huge amount, but even in a worst case scenario we know some kid like that will be a decent WT pro barring injury.

Presumably Jumbo could sign him as a neopro themselves. He must be a bottom third of their roster rider right now, but he’s definitely not going to be the worst, has a big potential upside and he’s come up through their development system. If you are going to go to the trouble of funding and running a development squad, hopefully you plan to hold on to its best products. Then again, I’m just some clown on the internet.
