Brutality in the HTV Cup today as the riders covered the 101km route from Hải Phòng to Hà Nội in under 2 hours, with an average speed of 50,69km/h. Little wonder, therefore, that no true escape could be made, despite all manner of attempts. In a brief truce after the second intermediate sprint, even yellow jersey Igor Frolov tried to escape, while 2nd-placed overall Loïc Désriac also attempted an escape in the group move that ensued. Once we reached the final 20km, however, most of the big guns tended to accept that this one was sprint-bound, and it was largely the young riders - some as young as 16-17 - on the Quân Đội team, the 'other' military team (with jerseys far less awesome than Quân Khu 7) to try in vain to stay away.

A somewhat technical run-in and some less than organised sprinting on a finish far more like something we might see from 'normal' cycling as opposed to the wide thoroughfare finishes common in Vietnam contributed to an almighty pile-up in the final straight which saw almost everybody bar the first 15 or so delayed. Also the yellow jersey of Frolov and the blue jersey of Nguyễn Tấn Hoài were among those who went down in the crash, the former seems to be fine but the latter has gone to hospital for a check and has required stitches in his forehead. In the absence of Nguyễn Tấn Hoài, however, Lộc Trời nevertheless continued their sprint dominance, as both Roman Maikin and Quàng Văn Cường managed to escape the wreckage, and went 1-2 on the stage with Bilguunjargal Erdenebat taking 3rd.

The time bonuses now mean that Maikin jumps from 4th to 1st as he was only 2 seconds behind Frolov, and Quàng Văn Cường who was only 1 second behind leaps up to 2nd. Maikin therefore now has a 3 second lead over his teammate, with Frolov and Désriac 8 seconds behind.

Lucas Eriksson won Circuit des Ardennes today and is now twice the winner of this race! His younger brother Jacob finished 7th overall also, for Riwal Cycling Team.

Maybe we could see these guys at WT in the future.

@tobydawq @RedheadDane did you see? A Swede won a race today :D

Second stage of the Vuelta del Uruguay and the remains of a 15-man break fought out the win taking over 2 minutes on the péloton. The winner was Ignacio Maldonado, who returned in November from a suspension after testing positive for CERA in the 2018 Vuelta a San Juan, beating veteran Argentine Gabriel Richard and much younger national TT champion Agustín Alonso. Alonso picked up some bonuses en route so is 2nd in the GC, 3" short of Maldonado, but Funvic were the biggest team to miss the group.

Hopefully Zigzag Wanderer got the chance to get out and see the mighty HTV Cup in action today, on their 43km 6th stage around Hoàn Kiếm Lake in Hà Nội.

With Lộc Trời now controlling the race with the leader's jersey in their ranks, this crit stage was essentially built around a few escapes in pursuit of the intermediate sprints, before being pulled back for a sprint. Some sections had decent crowds, other parts were fairly quiet and the race was similar. Probably of most consequence long term mid-stage would be Võ Thanh An taking 3 bonus seconds at the second intermediate, but obviously we were headed for another sprint with Lộc Trời keen to make hay while the sun shines and they're achieving stage win after stage win in them.

And so it was, yet it was neither Roman Maikin, yellow jersey and winner of two stages already here in Vietnam, nor expected leader and top sprinter Nguyễn Tấn Hoài, who took it, but instead Quàng Văn Cường, who had manoeuvred himself into 2nd and was clad in the points jersey that he was babysitting for Maikin following Nguyễn's crashing out of yesterday's stage (Lộc Trời are obliterating that ranking). Quàng was only 3 seconds behind Maikin on the GC, so he takes the maillot jaune from his teammate too. Trần Tuấn Kiệt took 2nd, while Loïc Désriac gaining 4 seconds for finishing 3rd also moves him up the GC.

Quàng therefore now leads with an advantage of 9 seconds from Maikin, with then Désriac at 13", frolov at 16", Huỳnh Thanh Tùng at 17" and Võ Thanh An at 20".

Quintana riding the Tour of Turkey. Basically just pot hunting.
Decent enough field though. I really hope to see something good from Lyu Xianjing, he's legit the most talented Chinese prospect I think we've ever seen, but obviously his road development has been almost completely stalled in the last couple of years.

Stupid downhill sprint! At least nothing bad happened but it's so unnecessary. Ewan getting his season back on track after missing out on all his big one-day goals (well, almost all, I think there is one more in September).

Good sprinters, no climbers. Quintana will win this with ease. Don't get why he's riding this, Arkea doesn't need the points anymore.

Looks like another typical case of the organizer thinking this won't be a bunch sprint.

To be fair, it was a pretty nicely thought out idea of a first stage, a decent sized cat.2 type climb 30km out so the sprinters had to work to fight for the right to sprint it out and it gave options to the attacker but while still making the sprinters likely to prevail - as long as they were comparatively durable as the likes of Bol would have to work hard to get back on. However the actual finish layout was not well thought out in the slightest.

Yes, it must be an awful punishment to be sent to a race on the Turkish Mediterranean coast.
It's one of my favourite races of the year. Chilled racing, fun sprints, nice summit finishes without the big world tour gc riders. Always sunny, cool scenery you don't normally get. And a rider like nairo doesn't have much else to do at this time of year if he isn't racing the Giro. He isn't an ardennes type of rider, Paris Nice + catalunya + ihztulia are done. Romandie too cold. I like that he's doing this race

Philipsen and Groves who were out of position both looked faster than Ewan - There could be some interesting sprints in the next week
