True enough: I would discount last year's TdF Grenoble ITT, he was just riding in the grupetto after Klöden crashed out, but I'm wrong on 9 of 10.

I will have to retreat to Leipheimer can best Alberto in the ITT.

Pais Vasco is normally a very hill ITT though, right? Aren't there usually some guys who are normally pretty average ITT riders but great climbers who put in good placings there?

And that was a part b stage on a day where levi finished 7 minutes back in part A (3rd from last). I'm guessing a crash?

Levi is definitely better in a tt if both are on peak form, Levi has the best tt position in the world and for such a small man is a freak of nature in time trials, Levi wouldnt demolish Contador but he would be 1 minute better in 50km flat tt quite easily, if the route was hilly it would of course be closer

for me the greatest American cyclist would be LeMond, his battles with the Badger and the Professor still can't be touched.
and there is no place for a rat like Landis on this list, strength without brains is meaningless

John Howard was a hardman, no doubt. Hardcore to the bone. Boyer was a pioneer, an American on a french team, good on him, also good tour rides.
His RAAM ride is legendary to me, Boyer that is.

I don't think that's a very good example personally. Contador used to peak for races like Pais Vasco. Leipheimer finished 6th that year at the Tour and annihilated everyone at the Deutschland Tour shortly after that. He was clearly off form for Pais Vasco.
