can I VPN be used to watch the race on Eurosport for free?

If you have a paying subscription on a cable network that also broadcasts digitally, yes.
For Belgium for instance, if you have a Telenet or Proximus subscription, you can log into your account and watch online via yelo (telenet) or Pickx (proximus). I think (at least for Telenet) you don't even need a VPN if you are inside the EU. Same for VRTnu/VRTmax, that is completely free and lets you watch sporza online from inside the EU, as long as you have a (free) account that is linked to an address inside of Belgium.

If everyone is now playing it everyone against Quick Step they might have a chance. Quick-Step team looks strong but they have to do a lot of work now alone ( if other teams don't get stupid. Attacking must start in 20 km,

Really sad that Pogačar crashed, although he already won LBL its the race where he often has bad luck. Hope that there is no broken bones.

This could help other riders chances like Pidcock, Landa or Skjelmose but Remco should be the favourite in the shape that he is.
