I just wanted to present my hypothesis as to why Mercedes Luxembourg might not want to become co-jersey sponsor of any cycling team any time soon. Of course they still might. Mercedes Denmark might also come through for them and replace SunGard to get back at Becca.

Why Nissan North America wants to sponsor a Luxembourg team I do not know but I expect it is a slightly larger franchise than Mercedes Luxembourg

Nissan are pushing their total electric car, The Leaf. The green market is seen as synonymous with cycling in the states. I don't know if they've marketed it with the same interest in Europe as here. (Constant ads on all televised cycling). These companies just don't through money out the window. They expect something in return. If they feel their ad money is yielding results then they might find it in their interest to outbid a rival sponsor.

"Apparently, the management was not satisfied with the results. We targeted to win the Tour and one of the classics. The results were not bad, but we did not achieve those goals. It’s like that. Professional cycling is a business. It’s the same thing in all business. You have to be the best, if not, you’re out."

So, now you are claiming that Nissan outbid Mercedes - that must have been easy for Nissan to do as Mercedes were not informed they had to bid to keep their valid contract.

Apparently you did not take Monfort's quote in the same light as I. The winner in such a business deal is almost always the one who has or finds the need to bring more capital to the table.

Monfort is dead on. It is just business. The good, the bad and the ugly.

......and contracts have no place in "Business"?

Contracts are for the little people

Is Mercedes Luxembourg going to court over it? (Notice some here continue to confuse the issue as if it were the real Mercedes and not a franchise) I doubt any of the sponsors involved would have put themselves in the legal cross hairs despite MBL's "surprise" over the deal. It may have been ugly, but legal.

Oh, so breaking contracts is legal if the sponsor is from Luxembourg? Got it.

The ethical flexibly of the groupies is impressive

You putting words in my mouth.

It's appalling that sponsors like Nissan can bring money to the sport. Strengthen a team. What we really need are weak sponsors that can't meet their obligations. Like we have not seen that before.

I did not no you where at the negotiation table on this one. Keep us informed. MBL says they were "surprised." That may be true, but at what point. This obviously wasn't done in a day. Perhaps they're saving some face. Who really knows?

There's too much speculation and not enough fact here. But your keeping if good faith with all that you post, a master of misinformation.

Monfort's statement speaks volumes.

Monfort is a cyclist and he was talking about cycling - Mercedes provided sponsorship for exposure, it was not result based.
I am sure Monfort would be singing a different tune if someone decided not to pay him for his services because they did not get results.

So breaking contracts is legal?

And you appear to confuse Nissan North America with the 'real' Nissan - or perhaps with Mr. Nissan himself who probably paid out of his own pocket.

Hey Doc, why do you keep it up that it's Mercedes and not Mercedes Luxembourg. So you now say Monfort is only a "cyclist." What does that make you? It is his profession. Is it yours?

Mercedes has made it clear that they were completely surprised by the announcement, they had not been notified, and have "a valid contract with Leopard SA through the end of 2013"

Why do you keep it up that its Nissan (who you claim outbid Mercedes) and not Nissan North America?

I said Monfort is a cyclist - not that he was "only" a cyclist as you suggest - please correct me if indeed he is not a cyclist.
His view has no relation to Mercedes (thats Lux division & the rest of the World)

Again, it is not Mercedes, but Mercedes Luxembourg. If they have a valid complaint then I am sure we will here about it in the courts or the deal will fall apart. If Mercedes proper wants to throw it weight around, it most certainly can. I sure Nissan wants to go to the turf in a big legal battle.

We'll see if the narrative pans out.

If not, think of the bright side, you'll have a whole new topic of contention against JB, LA, RadioShack and all forces of darkness for years to come.

Apparently you don't understand your own implicit language.

No- I tell you what I don't understand is, your point.

It is irrelevant whether it is a dealer, franchise or company (for either manufacturer) - what part of honoring existing contracts are you struggling with?

Agreed.

Exploring "The consequences of the recent decisions of the Leopard SA" certainly suggests they are looking for justice.

You don't get it, the rules do not apply when it comes to groupie logic.

There is always a way to justify actions. Breaking contracts is OK if it is only a Luxembourg franchise. It is just business. Nissan is more important because they sell leaf's and had wonderboy in their commercials (But don't anymore...hummm)

Mercedes Lux should have known the contracts were not really for 3 years.....but they are just haters who love cancer.

I'll wager not.

William what is your wager. That they did not suggest in their press release that they may take the matter further? If so read the press release again and explain to me how I'm wrong.

If they take Becca to court remains to be seen and not what I wrote

So not being factual is irrelevant. What makes you think that Nissan is not ready to offer MBL a buy out? My point is that none of us here have been at the table here and is highly unlikely that Nissan would have gone forward with the deal if they had not felt they where on solid ground legally. There are several reasons that MBL would play the role of a victim, namely they would have the need to protect their brand. If only publicly so. "Posturing" is the correct term I believe.

We'll see what pans out. I wager nothing will come of it.
