Not necessarily there were rumours of it merging with Saxo.

First news was that Santander would etablish a new team. Speculations whether they would fund Saxo instead were evntually started afterwards. I'm sure neither of them will be more than rumours and speculations.

Possibly yet I dont see how the whole Santander rumour ever materialised in the first instance so they may possibly be involved somehow.

Rumours are rumours but that is all that we have got to play with at the moment so...:p

IIRC Alonso wanted to create a cycling team with Contador (a good friend of him) as its star, and Santander is deeply connected to Alonso.
So uhm I guess that's the reason, but I may be wrong.

I'm sure he will leave radioshack after this year

I think he might actually go to BMC to replace Hushovd, who has some serious infection now or something like that.

the banking system is cracking in spain.so it looks difficult that after years of rumours about the alonso santander connection with no result something will finally happen this years.
but who knows.
they have also to rebuilt an image.
will cycling fit in this project?

Saxo/LeakyGas merger

What a great situation for everyone involved! Well, everyone except Cannondale, who will be taking it in the shorts, as I just can't see Specialized allowing El Pinguino to slither away out of its grasp. Oh, and Italia with only Lampre to wave the flag?

I don't see that happen; first of all saxo has limited budget, how the hell will they be able to absorb the rest of Liquigas with Sagan and Basso contract ? secondly i think that rather than be at the dependence of Riis, Amadio would prefere to run a Professional team with Ristora, letting Sagan go.

Also interesting: Alberto's deal with Specialized ends at the end of this year.

all right, that's what i was looking for

thanks

so let's see how the cannondale-specialized battle will end

(or if Banco Santander wants to build a new team for Alberto, we might see another bike supplier)

The simple reality is that if Amadio cannot find a sponsor his only option is to look to take his contracts (i.e. Sagan) to another team.

Santander funding Saxo?

Santander and Saxo are both banks competing in Europe and abroad; I don't see them funding the same team next season.

Will Santander have the funds to sponsor both Liquigas and Saxo? It's a much bigger organization, sure, but they sponsor both McLaren AND Ferrari F1, as well as football.

Although a Santander McLaren Venge painted chrome/red would look pretty sweet :D Even better if Mercedes, squeezed out by Nissan at RSNT, joined the party out of spite :D
