I think almost anybody would rather have Sanremo. But Murcía is Valverde's home race, lest we forget. Maybe he values a win in a less prestigious race in front of his family and friends more highly than a (much) more prestigious race in a country he's at loggerheads with.

I can't say I agree with him, but just because the majority hold one view doesn't mean that the opposing view automatically makes you an idiot.

I don't think Valverde thinks that at all, that's why I'm making fun of hrorta's post. I understand that Valverde rates the Vuelta over any classic cycling race, but I doubt he rates a Murcia win over a Milan-San Remo win... Or a Liège-Bastogne-Liège win for that matter.

Anyone who rather wins Vuelta a Murcia over Milan-San Remo is foolish.

And I know Freire is a jealous cyclist, but that has nothing to do with what you said. Scrap that Murcia part in your post and change it with Espana ;)
Murcia was hyperbole. But it wouldn't even have been a contest if I had said the Vuelta. He'd probably rather win one more Vuelta than 7 monuments.

Liège is much easier to reconcile with his other seasons' goals I guess.

If the only problem you had with my post was that I said Murcia, why'd you bring up Freire to challenge my point about his coming from a cycling culture that doesn't really value one-day races?

To show you that you don't have to follow that cycling culture. It's a decision that lies in his hands. Luckily for Valverde, he doesn't even have to chose as he can do both one day races and stage races! Which makes it all the more foolish that he doesn't ride Milan-San Remo or the Giro di Lombardia.

Too much disrespect for the winner. Did anyone else manage, with next to no team support, to stay near the front throughout the Capi? Or to be the only one that followed Nibali in the decisive attack (he attacked before Cancellara, guys)? Or to stay with "the two best descenders in the world" on the way down? Or to resist the Spartacus surge that has broken select groups in so many big races before? Anyone else (with the exception of Sagan) was allowed to do those things, but they didn't. Timing a sprint well cannot be outlawed, unless every race is to be a time trial, and that is what, after everything else I mentioned, Gerrans did.

very well said

Well done to Gerrans, he is having a great year and proving himself to be a great cyclist. There is no point complaining about Cancellara, he had plenty of opportunity to drop the other two but couldn't. This talk about sitting up and losing the race is nonsense. If you're not happy about the wheelsuckers you attack.

I'm glad Simon Gerrans won actually, unlike you :p

I'm not, he played it perfectly but I would've preferred Cancellara. It was thanks to him that Gerrans could win. Canc was very impressive.

Canc has always been impressive. His tactics on the other hand are becoming increasingly stupid.

yes Simon says Go at the pivotal point of the race when others said no and watched.

ebh lacked again engine and incredible cancellara. nibali make me sick to my stomach he totally f'd up all sagan's chances to win. I can;'t believe what an egomaniac he is. still incredibly impressive cancellara and also hoogerland :)

I'm not so sure. When you have a race plan, you commit to it. He went on the poggio. It was his best shot, and liquigas's best shot at that moment.

Imagine if he didn't get in there? Nibali didn't add much, and it still would have been Cancellara and Gerrans going down the chute together, with the rest of us bashing Liquigas for missing the move.

Sometimes you just get beat. Sagan couldn't mark the move, and Nibali had nothing left to try in the last few k's.

What would you have done? Sat back and finished 15th?

he is just calling it wheelsucking. he isn't blaming gerrans. yes gerrans did the right thing but he was still a wheelsucker. fact

Gerrans' sprinting probably would have got him a top5 from the group that was left, but he was good enough to follow Nibali on the climb and Cancellara on the descent/flat. Gerrans is no less worthy than any other possible winner today bar Cancellara.
