Not sure that there is anything I can usefully say at this point but my thoughts go to his family, friends, team and the wider motorsport community.

Thoughts too for Rossi and Edwards who were also in the accident and although physically fine, I imagine will be feeling terrible at the moment. I dont think there was anything they could do

Marco Simoncelli - RIP Sepang October 23rd 2011

RIP to Marco Simoncelli.

It's always horrible in the period after a death in motorsport because tragedy always seems to follow in twos. Obviously there are no similarities whatsoever between Wheldon's and Simoncelli's deaths, but whenever you see an accident your heart's in your mouth. Moto GP is a sport that can never realistically be made safe, but you often kind of forget just what the risks these riders take can be and what price mistakes can have. And this is at one of Hermann Tilke's modern, safety-conscious oceans of tarmac, not one of those old-fashioned circuits that sometimes could stand improving safety-wise either.

An individual, a character and a genuine motorcycling talent.

Motor sport has been lessened by his passing.

RIP Simo.

Don't want to get into to many details but were any other riders involved in the incident?

RIP Simoncelli.

Seems the cause was Simoncelli on his own, but Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi both hit him. Edwards went down, Rossi made it back to the pits. His helmet was knocked off by the incident, and that's never anything but bad.

he seemed to lose the rear and start to low side in a way that pulled him to the right across the track as he fell off the side of the bike. He was hit from the rear by Rossi and Edwards. Rossi stayed upright but his bike was damaged and he made it back the pits unhurt - I think without realising how badly Marco was injured. Edwards came off and dislocated his shouder (I think that was the only injury he had).

One of the images from afterward they showed Rossi after returning to the track look back up the road and put his head in his hands, so I think he probably knew. It was one of those where all you could really do was hope.

Oh ****. Just saw this now.

A huge loss for motorsport. As a racer he was the most exciting on the track and was a former world champion.

Thoughts go to his family and friends. RIP Marco.

this just leaves me gutted :(

Wheldon last weekend, Simo today :(

my dad stopped racing (cars) after three serious crashes in one weekend that effectively closed the circuit for any further racing... he wasn't a professional, but raced with many who were. he loved everything about racing but, when the second fatality happened in front of him, he realised he wanted to go home to his wife and kid (i wasn't born yet)... he said before that happened, it really hadn't hit home that there was a possibility he wouldn't -- speed and danger were part of the allure, but he had never thought before that he would die.

i know many of the motor sports, most especially F1 have tightened up safety... but i always watch them, now, thinking of my dad... and, no matter how safe they try to make the sport, freak accidents are going to occur.

RIP Marco -- may your spirit live on.

I saw it live, and didn't want to watch any replays - so I only watched it once and may be wrong - but for me it looked like Rossi made the sign of the cross immediately after the incident

So he may have known what has happened in just that moment

a very sad week for the motorsport.

Ciao Marco, you wil be missed

It turned out, that his initial medical treatment was scandalous.

- before the evacuation, no first aid was provided

- some "race-marshals", untrained Dilettants just moved his body immediately, without stabilisation or bolsters (??? Nacken-, Rückenstütze)

- ambulance couldn't enter the track at that spot, the marshals had to carry him on the litter (? krankentrage) for around 100m to the gate and had to lift him over 1m high crash barriers

- the most annoying thing is, that those freaks let Marco/the litter FALL from around 1m height

Easy to complain. Who knows if it had helped something if they had done everything right ?
But at least they should try.
MotoGP and track organizers should think about this.

Marco Simoncelli's funeral was yesterday. His father is really a strong man

I hope the man is not broken now

Found out on Friday that one of my co-workers was at the track in a stand near turn 12 when it happened. She was looking back along the track to turn 11 and saw the whole thing unfold. Most of the crowd in the stand were convinced Marco had to have died instantly - and they all sat there crying till well after the race was cancelled

Just the act of making the helmet strap fail would have probably been fatal..

Nice commemoration they did today. "58" everywhere
And very unique - with fireworks instead of minute of silence
Kevin Schwantz led the field on the lap of honour.

Perhaps Nr.108 and Nr.58 will meet up there.
