And how many times haven't we seen him getting caught because of the lack of skills to positioning himself correctly? Let's not make him out to be good at it, shall we...?

I'm simply giving him credit when it's due him, which you don't seem willing or able to do.

If Contador gets banned as seems likely, then who is there to beat Menchov?

Evans yes but that is in no way a foregone conclusion. Evans is a year older, and anything can happen between him and Dennis on climbs and in tts.

Then who? Wiggins, Menchov is a better climber.
Samu. Menchov is a better tter.
Schleck, Menchov is a way better tter.

Everyone else, Menchov is better at both.

Menchov has as good a chance as anyone to win this. If he times his peak and avoids crashes and organiser screwjobs that is.

Cause Dennis is not a year older as well-:p

On form Dennis is in the contender group but imo he will not be a contender, but I could be wrong.

Same goes for Evans in 2010 :)

Showed more at Giro then Menchov did, and was fatiguted by it in the Tour. While Menchov had Giro, and then Vuelta and with such competition he had in Vuelta he didn't do that well. and he himself said fatigue wasn't a problem from Giro

+1

If on form, I dont see Evans being able to drop Menchov on any climb. And Evans is the only cyclist besides Contador that I rate as highly or higher than Menchov on this course. Seeing how they both are known to screw up their peaks, there is no clear cut favorite of the two. Menchov will podium this year, if not win.

Yeah. And he himself said that only towards the end of the Vuelta he found real form.

Menchov went into the season thinking he would ride the Tour, but the ASO made the ridiculous decision to exclude last year's no. 3 in favour of Saur-Sojacrap. It may have disrupted his season planning a little?

I like Menchov. But I'm definitely not ready to give him credit for his positioning skills. :)

The wildcards were announced in January. On the 20th, the google search tells me. 107 days before the Giro start.

Edit: Giro wildcards were announced 2 months before the start

Like I said, when he's good, this doesn't happen to him. You can tell his form from his positioning. Ergo he's not bad at it, just doesn't bother most of the time.

So his winter prep was already mostly done. And maybe it put a dent in his motivation. It certainly seemed that way throughout the season.

Now you seem to be making excuses. Would Nibali not knowing his exact GT schedule on the 18th of January 2012 have his season planning disrupted?

I will go to the Giro to win. I really want the Giro, and afterwards, I will try to win the Vuelta

It's possible that he wasn't as motivated but that is speculation territory...

Maybe not, but Nibali isn't Menchov, who maybe has a little more difficult character.

I'm not making excuses for the guy, I think it's obvious that he didn't have his best form for most of the year so I don't need to.

menchov now seriously speaking is one of the biggest favourites for le tour.my arguments:

only grand tour he cares about
he will be again a timetrial beast in july
and my supreme one is that in the vuelta, stage to angliru i think,he said to himself something like "lolwut look at me i have again the 2009 giro form,i could even win this vuelta".fortunately, cobo was up front.my guess is if he will be in giro 2009 form with those shiitloads of watts,he will reach the podium.no chance though to touch alberto.
but i'd like to see menchov completing the collection
