What was this all about then?
From Pogacar's training ride yesterday

Cyclists before a race are like politicians in campaign (and not only then).

Oh darn :(
He's the only one of the sprinters who had a chance against the WvA, Pogacar and the likes.

That’s not entirely true about the “only chance.” The remaining sprinters can’t stay on their wheels on the climb but there are times when the group of 20-30 riders dropped near the top come back on the leaders, and then any sprinter left in that group has a shot. That’s not my prediction, but the race history shows it can happen.

If a couple riders gets a gap who is gonna pull the peloton back tomorrow? A few teams have lost their main sprinter. I could see Quickstep but if there are strong riders in a group with 20 seconds after the descent. It might be hard for them if no one else help.

I refuse to believe:
a) the poggio is hard enough
b) Pogacar is explosive enough

for him to "ride away" from everyone, especially types like Van Aert, on that sort of climb. I simply cannot fathom people keep comparing Tirreno 10% climbs, which were longer as well to this. Or Strade for that matter where he also escaped on the longest hard part. Its totally different kind of effort.
Agreed. In addition, most of the instances when Pogacar has simply ridden away from his opponents on a climb it’s out of a small selection of riders that have already done a hard race (even with 52km to go as at SB). It’s different to try to ride away solo from half the peloton that despite the distance have a lot power left in their legs. And he’s not going to take them by surprise like Nibali did. But I hope he does go for it; I’m all in for the spectacle :)

Are there even going to be any good sprinters in this race to contest a bunch sprint? With Ewan and Bennett now out sick too, it looks like there’s only Jakobsen even on the start list. If there’s a headwind and it somehow does come back together we could get a really random lower tier sprinter winning,
You mean “good sprinters” like Goss or Ciolek?

That’s true. But it’s also possible the couple riders who got away won’t cooperate fully in those last kilometers. Not everyone is like Cancellara who (sometimes unfortunately) will just keep timetrialing to the line with whoever was on his wheel.

I guess that depends who is in the group.

A lot of talk about Pog, but what will Jumbo do? Surely they would want to at least try distancing Jakobsen and will surely keep riding after the descent, if he is some seconds behind. Not letting him get the chance to sprint for the win.

Remco would be the perfect guy to do a long range attack here. The climp profile is perfect for him.

Bummer about Ewan being out. I do think that really changes things and opens it up to more possible winners. I also have to wonder if Pogacar's recent illness will blunt his efforts just a bit. I wonder if this is a year for a 2nd tier sprinter victory.

Did they win in bunch sprints?
Good point. With Goss it was a case of a sprinter hanging on to large escape group (10 maybe?), getting pulled to the line and winning because he was the only sprinter in that group. Seems to me the same type of thing could happen with a 2nd tier sprinter who hangs on with a Chasing large group that catches the leaders before the line. But reading what I just wrote, I think I'm straining to suggest a convoluted scenario unlikely to happen. So I'll just drift to the back of the group, grab a bottle and just follow wheels for awhile ;)

Ewan winning this would be a refreshment tbh.

The last 5 editions have went to the attackers. MSR is supposed to be 50/50 between attackers and sprinters.
