UAE realize that beating big boys in the last 10 km is almost impossible. Short&shallow climbing, descending and sprint. MVP is better at all of them. There are also guys better at sprinting or descending. UAE really has to make the last part of the race hard: not just on climbs but also on flats. La Manie would help if ridden super hard so MVP suffocates a bit. An all out attack on Cipressa (catapulting Pog) is also a possible scenario. if not then brutal tempo there is guaranteed by UAE methinks.

Interesting that VDP is convinced Pog attacks on the Cipressa.
he said more or less the complete opposite in the Gazzetta interview:

(gt) "On the Poggio it will be difficult to make a difference, but he [Pogacar] could do it. He looks super-impressive, but he has already demonstrated so much in the past that this is no longer shocking."

▶And if this time Tadej attacks on the Cipressa?

"Uff. It hasn't been seen for a long time, it's almost impossible. I would never do it. However...".

Ok, that Cipressa record is definitely getting smashed. Cipressa, Poggio B2B seems impossible though.

With the amount of UAE guys actually openly saying they're gonna go hard on the Cipressa this might actually all be big bait.

On the other hand, doesnt really matter if other teams know or not ofcourse. It's not like everyone doesnt try to be in front there anyways.

UAE has a simple tactic and that is Del Toro to break Cippresa and leave 20-25 people and among them Del Toro, Wellens, Pog then Del Toro pulls from the top of Cippresa to the bottom of the Poggio and takes over Wellens and in the last 1km attacks Pog so whoever survives, all other options are not realistic

UAE is generally a quite lopsided team. Full of strong riders with poor positioning and descending skills. It was Fisher-Black with Almeida on his wheel who lost contact with Plapp on the Châteauneuf descent and then had to chase afterwards, only for neither of the two being able to follow Cattaneo and Bouwman when they bridged the gap on Berre-les-Alpes.

Last year almost every detail favoured MvdP, I doubt he will be that lucky again. Especially as his most loyal lackey, WvA, won't be in the race to drag him up half the climb.

Pogacar is likely to have a gap after Poggio. The question is whether he can maintain it on the descent. Last year's shitshow behind Ganna did not promise much success. So I wouldn't be surprised if some 2nd tier guy won the race.

Nobody has ever come close to Colombo and Gontchenkov, not even the mythical pirate himself in 1999 despite insane moto pacing. It would be absolutely hilarious if we go sub 9:10.
It's still insane enough, if they do a time around 9:19.

2023:5,7 km@4,1%---9:45---average speed 35.08 km/h (80 riders peloton)
2022:5,7 km@4,1%---9:30---average speed 36.00 km/h (30 riders peloton)
1996:5,7 km@4,1%---9:19---average speed 36.71 km/h(Colombo-Gontchenkov)-RECORD

“Two years ago Davide Formolo did the climb in 9:30 and only 27 riders were left in the front group. Last year when it was 9:50, there were nearly 70 riders left. This year it’s possible to go under nine minutes. In my opinion, no more than 20 riders can do this. It is very complicated and there’s still 22km from the top of the climb but staying away from that point doesn’t just depend on Tadej but also his rivals. Full gas on the Cipressa, full gas to the Poggio, it’s a hard, hard race. but the plan is to win Milan-San Remo. Tadej is a super rider and we have plans for many situations,” he added.

Pogacar might be the only one in that peloton tomorrow, who can break the record. But then he will be on his own.

Team presentation is underway.
