Mispronounced names

[Don't be late Pedro]

Since I tend to listen to only English broadcasts I am certain that rider's (and probably team's) names are being incorrectly pronounced.

For instance:

Edvald Boasson Hagen:
Bo-sen Har-gen
Boy-sen Har-gen (according to Phil)

Thor Hushovd:
Hoosh-off

Robert Gesink:
He-sink
Ge-sink

Anyone know what is correct for the above and any other common mistakes?

The ones that really get to me are Euskatel and Kreuzinger.

Spanish commentators (even the only one that gets Dutch names right): Christian Knees. As in, knees. In English.
(IPA should be mandatory in schools all around the world to make these threads viable: [niːz])

Of course my own personal tactic with the... somewhat odd (from my perspective) names is simply to say it as fast as possible.

I guess it depends whether you have to letter "ä" in your alphabet or not, it's not possible to pronounce it correctly without having it in your native language.

Isn't Estonian <ä> just /æ/, the same sound as in standard English cat? The tricky part is that it's in a diphthong, but still, the difficulty is not being able to pronounce the name, but knowing how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Yes.

Harmon is pronouncing is pretty alrightly comparing to some others.

I really don't see how Phil can think that Boasson Hagen is pronounced "Boyson Hagen". It's a pretty straight-forward name to pronounce really, and most other commentators get it somewhat right.

I can understand the confusion with Hushovd, as some people think there's a "sh" sound in the middle there. But "Hus" and "Hovd" are separated. Obviously the "V" is not pronounced as a "F" either...

To be fair to Harmon, he is normally pretty good with most names, I know he used to seek out those who's names he didn't know how to pronounce and ask them face-to-face.

Voigt is pronounced Voeet by the French. In Italy they get it right.

They are "Euskaltel" and "Kreuziger". There are two Ls in Euskaltel and no N in Kreuziger.

Jacob (as in the English name) Fool's Gang is another one that irritates me.

Paulo Martins on Portuguese Eurosport has some spectacularly bad ones too - Robert Jesinquingue and Tadége Val-je-veque being particularly notable.

he does that on purpose. When the "Liquigas" team first started both PandP called it "Leaky Gas" for awhile. Pretty clever. Their handlers must have told them to stop.
