But I would still very much like to have other hands on board, and Eshnar's retirement is more recent.

With his dedication to the CQ game I always assumed the mod ad was still up as a safeguard in case @Armchair Cyclist gets involved in a racketeering scandal or something shady.

Well, that's kind of a catch though, right? I saw two people in the last week who were banned. Their posts were in multiple threads, but its still just two people.

I know this thread is generally used to complain about moderation, but I just wanted to say thanks to Armchair Cyclist (and anyone else who may step up to share the load in future) for taking on the role. I've been a moderator on a discussion forum in the past and it's not easy, trying to enforce rules consistently even when one wouldn't necessarily have chosen all of those rules oneself. Being in the middle of the eternal debate between those who want stricter moderation in some areas and those who want less. And having one's own enjoyment of the forum reduced, as by the nature of the role you're always dealing with the worst of it, the posts which get reported, the spats between members, receiving angry pms when intervening in those situations.

But without moderation things go downhill fast, as one forum I was on soon discovered when they got rid of moderators entirely. And over the last couple of decades a number of specialist forums I was on have shut down, with "social media" a poor replacement for those discussions imo, even if that trend seems inevitable. It's usually a combination of factors which lead to them shutting down, with owners losing interest, feeling the forum is no longer worth the cost or hassle, or sometimes if a corporate parent is involved they simply no longer wish to be associated with some of the discussions and feel the downside risk outweighs any upside. But a difficulty in sourcing and retaining suitable staff, often volunteers given the nature of the site, is also a common factor.

I obviously have no idea how much longer this forum will be around for, but I'll miss it if it goes. And I appreciate anyone who is prepared to put time into keeping it going for now.
