I usually think the best of people.. But..when someone posts a link to a survey I am inclined to help because it's normally cycling related or something to do with fitness, health, but it just feels problematic because of getting roped into a virus blackhole..like I said ,likely harmless but I have thought that before

I incline towards letting surveys, particularly academic surveys, through rather than deleting them as spam because:
  • They aren't trying to sell;
  • We might have a worthwhile contribution to make to a worthwhile project;
  • Students surveying on cycling matters are likely to have a genuine interest in cycling;
  • That seems to be the precedent from previous mods (although of course I don't know if deleting surveys had been done in the past, as I wouldn't have seen them).

Is this a reasonable take?

Of course, if a survey turns out to be a poorly disguised marketing push, or if the links bring up virus warnings, let me know and I will blitz it.

(The only recent one I have noticed was University of Utrecht, IIRC, which I would have assumed was safe) edit: I didn't RC, it was Antwerp, but the same principle applies

Well argued. But the survey in question concerned commuting (carrying baggage). I'd argue the scope of this site, and this forum is primarily concerned about competitive forms of cycling: Road, MTB, cyclo-cross and gravel. Not commuting or students who cycle to class. Maybe the rules can specify this which would empower the moderators? Just my opinion.

But it's not that far out to think that people who post here are also simply cyclists.

All points were excellent, none were mine..I am just saying that a link can say HelpDisabled, PoorChild,Cyclists.org or dot com.. which can actually be to a Chinese or Russian bot farm and suck the credit card numbers off of Amazon, Booking. com, pet food and car mat companies that I used this week.
I am unclear about the details but 2 major security incidents happened some w Gmail and another from credit reporting site were info was compromised. So I am quick normally to click on majority of something cycling related, not really sure if warmshowers .com or org is a travel help site or now I am part of a kinky fetish database..I am not passing judgement if warm showers are your thing.. Many people find LA Chargers sites to be sadomachism test.

Primarily, yes, but not exclusively: the survey you refer to is in the section "Enthusiast Road Cycling". Commuting and enthusiasm are not usually associated with each other, but if some members of our forum are so enthused about cycling that it is their preferred method of carrying items across town or commuting (and some of my weekend riding club IRL are, so not unlikely that the same is true of those here).

Other topics in the Enthusiast (non-competitive) section are clothing for cold weather riding, planning for cycling trips, anecdotes of our own rides, problems with motorised vehicles: a cornucopia of non-competitive cycling discussion areas to supplement, but not diminish, our discussions on cycling as sport.

I'm not sure where warmshowers enters into this: uantwerpen.eu seems much safer. If anything here directed forum users to warmshowers, (whether that proves to be a competitor to hansgrohe and X2O or something much more salacious) I would be nuking it and the poster as spam.
