I'm sorry Susan, but I have to say that I'm really, really disappointed at your personal, heavy-handed intervention in Free form. The one person who publicly admitted to having complained has an agenda - he's a 'pro-life', anti-abortion nut. He is also one of a very small minority and you really should not have rushed in to satisfy his particular point of view. The man has no sense of proportion, or humor.

The fact that you felt it right to censor what Krebs wrote in his 'farewell' a short time ago is extremely regrettable - I'm choosing my words very carefully here because I saw what Krebs wrote, and I think that your decision to delete is both outrageous, and dead wrong

If I start complaining about some of Scott's pronouncements that I might find objectionable, will you censor him too? A sad day for free speech at CN.

:(

Seriously. Completely ridiculous. I used to generally think the moderators did a solid job. But this is just plain wrong.

I get why people, myself included, are uncomfortable with politics and religion getting special treatment on forums like these, the reality is that both topics tend to derail threads, and forums tend to have one policy to govern both topics (whatever that policy is).

Well, that's not what happened. Maybe try checking out the specific instance instead of making over generalizations.

Francois the Postman said:
But there are plenty of dedicated humor, free speech, porn and politics sites on the INTERNET. I am not sure why CN should cater for all "likes" and "hobbies - side interests" of all posters on this cycling site, or take the attitude of the most permissive and liberal posters as the standard for all?

Oh ok then why don't you just close the whole café? No non cycling threads or posts. That sounds great.

I don't think we, currently, have a thread for religion (only), but the deletion in the chaos/humor thread of religion-themed posts will have fallen victim to that same thinking: it is in a thread that isn't dealing with that topic exclusively, and it is probably a wee bit to explicit to wave it through anyway.
I am all for free speech, but everyone bites their tongue in some places.

Also, yes we do have a religion thread. Check this thread one or two pages back for a link.

And bolded makes no sense at all.

No, the bit that was edited out was a tirade full of explicates and insults that are not accepted here from anyone, in any post. In this particular case, CN itself wasn't happy with that bit. Krebs displeasure with CN was left unedited, and for all to see.

If you have a problem with that, as I said above, don't speak to the mods, speak to Dan.

Shows you how much modding I do in that area of the site. Also highlights we don't remove religious discussion, and long may it be so.

Politics, especially polarising statements, tend to get removed from all threads, except threads made for that type of discussion.

Religion, especially polarising statements, is also getting that same treatment.

Don't ask me if I like that, ask me if it is policy here.

One side-comment, just a general observation, the more people make a real issue out of incidents, the more policy will develop to govern everything.

Fine. Here's my message to Dan:

I'm migrating to Velonation after a decade+ of daily CN reading.

And rightfully so. it was over the boundaries of proper decorum. more asterisks than vowels.

I have no problem with it.

If you PM him he will get it.

You do realize that on that site this sort of thread (or the entire "General" area in which this particular issue arose) doesn't even exits? Cycling only, with a couple of hundred posts across the entire forum?

I am not interested in a contest between the two sites, I like both, but their Forum is a fraction of this one (Giro 2010 still on page #1 in pro-cycling), so doesn't exactly have the issues that CN faces, that come with catering for a very large community with very diverse backgrounds.

Only cycling allowed, so it is much easier to keep everyone happy that way too.

Posting religious-related photos in the Chaos forum is not "discussion". The problem there is that all were making fun of or discriminating one certain religion, and there were complaints.

Susan

I disagree completely (I am sure you are shocked). It is in fact discussion of the most provocative kind. And nobody was discriminated against. Someone may have been offended, but that does not denote discrimination.

Interesting that all of those defending the use of the word "rape" are men. I would like to hear from the female users.....

Susan

Yea, because men defend rape all the time...

One of the single most ridiculous posts I have ever read here, and that includes BPC posts.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. I came here primarily to engage in cycling related discussion. Sadly, because the great majority of the posters here seem to embrace only one side of the political and theological spectrum, I feel compelled to engage them. The lack of civility and outright vitriol that I have encountered because of my deeply held personal views over the last couple of days has been astounding. Having said that, I wouldn't mind if the forum was 100% cycling related.

That I have, by wrongly reporting a post regarding religion, put myself into a category with someone who would write this makes me feel ashamed of myself. I know we are all hypocrites, but when my hypocrisy places me in a category of people who profess the things you do, I know I have crossed a line I never wanted to cross.

fail.

Susan had a legitimate point. and she was being respectful of the females member -- for which i thank her.

i did not speak up because i really haven't been involved in the threads that use the word rape so it would be unfair to comment on them.

so lay off Susan.

if she wasn't here, i doubt i would be.

maybe not a loss to you, TFF, but...

(i am a fan of krebs, btw, but that's mostly because i lust after all the gorgeous homemade tortillas and excellent dishes he posts up. so, please. krebs. don't go.)

Susan made an offensive editorial point (which I would not dare wish to be removed) with her comment as much as she asked any question. That you do not see the difference does not surprise me in any way.

As for you leaving, I never want to banish the thoughts of another regardless of whether I agree with them or not. You add to this forum even if I don't agree with your additions. I afford your right to post what you wish with as much respect as I do someone who would mirror my every thought. It does seem apparent that you do not hold the same ideological belief. That is your right, but don't paint me with a brush developed inside of your mind that is reflective of your views.

Why? Does rape only happen women?

I actually thought Susan was wrong to bring up female opinions - the term is either appropriate in a forum setting or its not - it has nothing to do with gender.

no, i did not see the difference nor the offense. blame it on my sex.

as for painting you with you a brush inside my mind, i don't. and you know that's true. give me a little respect -- as i do you.

rape has to do with power, not sex.

as there are countless, offensive posts pointing towards LA (or other) bending behind bars, in the shower... distasteful all, and i choose to ignore as the ignorance of the posters is not worth reporting any more.

that Susan asked for female opinions was respectful. we are a minority (to put it mildly) and i do think we add to the flavour of the forum... too much testosterone gets f***ing boring and juvenile.

That angle was raised behind the scenes too, that that split isn't along gender lines. Saying that, in reality women are far more likely to fall victim to this, or know someone who has been through that hell, so I would be amazed if a more trivial use of the word rape -slang only in some circles-, didn't evoke, on the whole, stronger reactions in women than men.

I articulated why I think the term is inappropriate - my gender has nothing to do with my opinion nor should it have bearing on opinion.

If rape has to do with power, not sex - then asking for the opinions of women is entirely inappropriate.

Also, Susan's remark was wrong in using the gender of one poster to assume that it represented opinions of that gender.

i'm not going to get in a pi$$ing war with you. you will win. congratulations.

that you don't understand the respect that Susan extended to the few females on this forum and chose, instead, to take offense, is your problem.

Francois put it beautifully above and i will leave it at that.

I am sorry that asking you a simple question is some sort of ****ing war to you.

Why did Susan have to seek womens opinion? There was nothing stopping anyone from commenting.

she asked our opinion because we did not speak up.

Gin, i point you to Francois' post.

if you do not get that rape is more often perpetuated against women, then i feel sorry for ignorance.

a pity, as i find most of your posts quite informative.

just to clear the air. prison rape is very real possibility
to the nearly 2.3 million inmates currently incarcerated in prisons and jails in the United States suggests that raped inmates number 43,800.

Perhaps the media has help to desensitize people
Prison rape has become a staple of comedy or drama in films and television. Films such as Office Space, Half Baked, and Let's Go to Prison have used it for comedic purposes, while prison drama Oz contained multiple scenes of rape. Kurt Vonnegut's novel Breakfast of Champions features a character, Wayne Hoobler, whose prison experience consisted of sexual encounters with other inmates.

OK I'm done.

thanks thirteen my roommate is leaving for a couple of days so the cooking creativity can flow. He doesn't eat chile or red meat. tonight chicken stir fry and i think I'll need a 1/2 liter tequila after today

Firstly, the petty personal stuff adds little to your opinion.

Again, nothing was stopping anyone speaking up.

To go back to Susans comment - only 1 person vaguely 'defended" its use when she posted. While I don't agree with their point re slang, it was valid as an opinion of use of the term.
Having a womans opinion that it is an offensive term does not make it moreso.
