I'm sorry Susan, but I have to say that I'm really, really disappointed at your personal, heavy-handed intervention in Free form. The one person who publicly admitted to having complained has an agenda - he's a 'pro-life', anti-abortion nut. He is also one of a very small minority and you really should not have rushed in to satisfy his particular point of view. The man has no sense of proportion, or humor.

The fact that you felt it right to censor what Krebs wrote in his 'farewell' a short time ago is extremely regrettable - I'm choosing my words very carefully here because I saw what Krebs wrote, and I think that your decision to delete is both outrageous, and dead wrong

If I start complaining about some of Scott's pronouncements that I might find objectionable, will you censor him too? A sad day for free speech at CN.

I get why people, myself included, are uncomfortable with politics and religion getting special treatment on forums like these, the reality is that both topics tend to derail threads, and forums tend to have one policy to govern both topics (whatever that policy is).

Well, that's not what happened. Maybe try checking out the specific instance instead of making over generalizations.

But there are plenty of dedicated humor, free speech, porn and politics sites on the INTERNET. I am not sure why CN should cater for all "likes" and "hobbies - side interests" of all posters on this cycling site, or take the attitude of the most permissive and liberal posters as the standard for all?

Oh ok then why don't you just close the whole café? No non cycling threads or posts. That sounds great.

I don't think we, currently, have a thread for religion (only), but the deletion in the chaos/humor thread of religion-themed posts will have fallen victim to that same thinking: it is in a thread that isn't dealing with that topic exclusively, and it is probably a wee bit to explicit to wave it through anyway.
I am all for free speech, but everyone bites their tongue in some places.

Also, yes we do have a religion thread. Check this thread one or two pages back for a link.

Also, yes we do have a religion thread. Check this thread one or two pages back for a link.

Shows you how much modding I do in that area of the site. Also highlights we don't remove religious discussion, and long may it be so.

Politics, especially polarising statements, tend to get removed from all threads, except threads made for that type of discussion.

Religion, especially polarising statements, is also getting that same treatment.

Don't ask me if I like that, ask me if it is policy here.

One side-comment, just a general observation, the more people make a real issue out of incidents, the more policy will develop to govern everything.

You do realize that on that site this sort of thread (or the entire "General" area in which this particular issue arose) doesn't even exits? Cycling only, with a couple of hundred posts across the entire forum?

I am not interested in a contest between the two sites, I like both, but their Forum is a fraction of this one (Giro 2010 still on page #1 in pro-cycling), so doesn't exactly have the issues that CN faces, that come with catering for a very large community with very diverse backgrounds.

Only cycling allowed, so it is much easier to keep everyone happy that way too.

Posting religious-related photos in the Chaos forum is not "discussion". The problem there is that all were making fun of or discriminating one certain religion, and there were complaints.

I disagree completely (I am sure you are shocked). It is in fact discussion of the most provocative kind. And nobody was discriminated against. Someone may have been offended, but that does not denote discrimination.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. I came here primarily to engage in cycling related discussion. Sadly, because the great majority of the posters here seem to embrace only one side of the political and theological spectrum, I feel compelled to engage them. The lack of civility and outright vitriol that I have encountered because of my deeply held personal views over the last couple of days has been astounding. Having said that, I wouldn't mind if the forum was 100% cycling related.

That I have, by wrongly reporting a post regarding religion, put myself into a category with someone who would write this makes me feel ashamed of myself. I know we are all hypocrites, but when my hypocrisy places me in a category of people who profess the things you do, I know I have crossed a line I never wanted to cross.

That angle was raised behind the scenes too, that that split isn't along gender lines. Saying that, in reality women are far more likely to fall victim to this, or know someone who has been through that hell, so I would be amazed if a more trivial use of the word rape -slang only in some circles-, didn't evoke, on the whole, stronger reactions in women than men.

Firstly, the petty personal stuff adds little to your opinion.

Again, nothing was stopping anyone speaking up.

To go back to Susans comment - only 1 person vaguely 'defended" its use when she posted. While I don't agree with their point re slang, it was valid as an opinion of use of the term.
Having a womans opinion that it is an offensive term does not make it moreso.
