To reinforce what Palmerq said - and to rule a line in the sand permanently because it has gotten beyond a joke.

##############################################

THIS thread is for the discussion of moderation on this site. It is not for conversations between members, it is not for discussion of people's posting styles.

From this point on, any such post will receive an infraction. If this leads to a suspension then you have been clearly warned and the moderators will not change the decision.

You also cannot claim to have not seen the warning as these have been posted in this thread more than 10 times in the last few months

Every single thread on this forum is for fun and entertainment (and some financial gains). Or has there been some earth shattering discoveries or legal repercussions from some supposedly serious threads on here?

NOPE! its all fun and entertainment.

So before people go off the deep end on justifying what the forum is about they need to regain their consciousnesses back to the real world of the title of the URL.

I know the mods at times think they're ruling the overthrowing of Earth and all humanity but its just cuss words or offensive words and the random superfluous skin.

All back to normal. Don't get me started on that cat thread or the one where the world isn't going your way... please!

None of the mods think that way. All we try to do is to keep this forum in line with what CN wants it to be. Thats the bit that you conveniently left out of your post.

Yes, it is all fun and entertainment - but within the bounds of what CN wants to achieve. Thats not the same as saying that everyone is free to create as many threads as they like on very similar topics or go around derailing conversations because its "fun", etc.

I highlighted the magic word :D

As for your second paragraph after the hyphen, you know that line is so fragmented that CN knows it is a lost cause and its mostly a patch on a tube that's gone through a bed of nails.

But good job trying, the world awaits!

Its all fun man, just admit it.

You can request it, but it will be up to the moderators to judge the validity of the request, also taking into account the contributions of others to the thread, and what the thread adds to the forum as a whole.

An OP doesn't own a thread. On the whole, our aim to keep submitted threads open, within reason.

Maybe create a sandbox and ball pit area for the youngsters to have fun in.

That has been suggested by more than a few posters, apparently however it runs counter to CN's strict "No Fun" edict.

fun is still allowed, but with the 3 strikes policy you get one day of fun and a one month vacation. i've found it to be a fair trade :D

Pfff… Another infraction, seriously Susan? My moral compass must be so very distorted.

What’s wrong with this place? I’ve noticed that there’s no such thing as a clean sheet around here and that I sadly became persona non grata in no time (illustrated perfectly by the warning I got for my Sinterklaas post in which I used a nasty 4-letter word and censored 2 of those 4 letters with an asterisk, people do this stuff all the time!).

Many will argue that I am an annoying presence and that I don’t make a lot of sense most of the time, but I don’t see how a harmless and obvious joke about a certain member’s gender (and no, I didn’t offend D_T again!) would justify an infraction.

I’m going to repeat the joke right here with the user’s name left out:

---mod deleted material is not to be reposted Boomcie, although I get you hoped that by leaving out the poster's name it would be an argument, not an offence----reposting it in any form is not your call though ---

How very insulting… Maybe consult the user in question about it before going about handing out friggin’ infractions… It was obviously meant in good fun and I have always been on good terms with this user. I myself have PM-ed him and he wasn’t offended at all by my remark. Please use some perspective in your judgment.

So wait, I’ve received an infraction because I didn’t offend anyone?

Makes a lot of sense.

Can we please reverse the infraction now, because I don’t see how you can justify it any longer…

Clean slate? You don't have one Boomcie. Not yet.

Someone who comes back from a month-ban carries over 2 strikes. That person is posting on (self-inflicted) very thin ice. Any single further transgression in the next month will get you an immediate further month.

After a wittty come-back, you have spent the last month mucking about, having some fun. Instead of making sure you kept a clean nose, you have been messing about.

If your post the last month have been drawing the moderator's attention, instead of pointing just at us, you might want to point at yourself too. You enjoyed stepping into the light and throwing yourself about, don't come complaining when people are looking.

Apart from that, I will take your complaint to the staff room, and we'll discuss it there.

If you have been given an infraction without getting the automatic month off on top, I would take it as a hint that we are trying to tell you (again) that we suggest you rethink your general attitude to the forum at the moment, and put you on official notice that "enough is enough", and one of the mods has picked a post to make that point over. Harsh? Possibly. Self-inflicted to a large degree. Yup. If we wanted to pick on you and be heavy-handed with you, you wouldn't still be posting after the month you've had.

"it was just between him and me" is only valid if it is a PM. You post it for all to see, we judge how it falls within the general posting guidelines, and how it affects the overall tone in here, not how it is taken by each and every addressed poster at that moment. You wanted to make a private joke to him, a PM is the way. You want to share how funny you are, on probation, then you take an obvious risk if you make a joke over the back of another poster.

We also have had several occasions where someone was ok with a type of joke initially, or happy to ignore it, but started to complain about the general tone after it became a barrage, or other people who missed the (hidden) subtlety, picked up on it too, or saw it as a license to do it to others. Some of that has involved you, and some of that has involved, ironically, the person who was, as you write, ok with it in this instance. We also have to take into account how other people respond to how someone is "joked about".

It isn't as simple as "he's ok with it". That has come up in this thread before too.

A general reminder to the forum that when mods delete material, it is not to be reposted by the user (not even with minor alts). Anyone who does runs the risk of getting an (additional) infraction.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Francois. Appreciate it. Also, thanks for subtly pointing out the difference between clean sheet and clean slate! :)

Sadly, I still fail to see how my post warrants an infraction. I didn't use any foul language and my comment wasn't overly offensive to anyone in the right mind + I honestly believe it was clear that it was made in good fun.

You keep saying that I'm inflicting this on myself, but all I'm really guilty of is being bored and posting some nonsensical things every now and then. I get the feeling that some mods are looking at my posts through a telescope. I'm already monitoring my posting behavior/ leaving out the extremes. All I'm asking for is some common sense and perspective on your side.

Please do take it to the staff room. My current reputation as a troublemaker will only result in my reasonable pleas for justice being ignored. It's secondary school all over again.

Whoops, sorry. I just wanted everyone to see how offensive my remark really was. I don't want to be labeled "super offensive a-hole" when I'm not.

Let me see if I have this straight.

It is ok for a poster to call someone obsessed. Fine to pretend they have not answered a question, when it has been answered multiple times. it is also no problem to claim someone has written something, when they haven't

But calling an obvious troll a troll is against the rules? Really?

I am doing this all wrong. Forget actually trying to engage or have a dialog. Insults and confusion are where it is at. Let the fun begin.

Yesterday after several posts that were clear trolling and baiting, Oldborn was warned in public by a moderator to stop trolling

Alpe d'Huez said:
Give it a rest, Oldborn. The man is dead. If you have nothing nice to post at this point in this thread, don't post anything at all. Got it?

He disregarded this totaly and then proceeded to take it a step further, making posts that didn't just break, but made a total mockery of the following rules

6. No insulting other members. This includes counter-insults ("he started it")

3. Illegal, libelous, or slanderous posts or threads will not be tolerated, and result in infractions or bans

7 No caustic insults or humiliation of individuals in public outside of this forum. Most public figures may be considered fair game for criticism or lampooning, but again, use common sense.

and especially this one

11 Blatant lying, baiting, or teasing other members will not be tolerated.

The whole thread was then told to behave themselves here

Alpe d'Huez said:
Not Susan, me. I'm frankly annoyed by it. Next negative post will result in the thread being closed. I may consider handing out an infraction or suspension if it's warranted.

Final warning.

But odlborn continued trolling.

A previous post of his was then edited, and I assume the warning at the bottom from another moderator - to stop, was sent to him.

http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showpost.php?p=746125&postcount=76

But oldborn then decided to push it even further and continue his trolling in another thread, which was supposed to be about a totaly different dead person, with a very very offensive and slanderous post.

http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=16109

Even if we overlook the repeated and vulgar baiting/ bullying directed at me (if not other posters), this was a clear message to the moderators that he doesn't care for the rules. It was also a demonstration of a total inability to behave himself.

It also showed extreme disrespect to at least 1 dead person, by spamming the topic of their death by bringing in a discussion from another thread into it ( a discussion which he had been warned to stop anyway)

I ask if a ban is being considered?

Thank you.

Ok, hitch. Since you smirched your hands with this guy, I'll give you a 10.000 posts solidarity gift and do the same.

You can be slanderous, libelous, trolling, insulting.....whatever.
But obviously, like some few others, this oldporn guy has NO class.
Considering the reasons for me and others getting infractions, warnings, bans etc.......this 24h ban is really a joke. But within the 3-whatever rulessystem I guess.
I learned this system can be overruled if needed.

Of course you need class for that.

Just curious...was Oldborn's ban a result of the member's call for it?

Also, before you take this post the wrong way, I wanted to add here a favorable impression of the moderators' actions (actually non-actions) in the midst of the heated Hitchen debate. As an observer, it was growing more uncomfortable by the post. The arguments presented by the principals were, for the most part, articulate and persuasive...one poster being tactically logical while the other presenting a passionate, beautifully expressed position. My growing concern was that we were witnessing a ticking time bomb which would only lead to injury of one if not both members. I have come to appreciate, in this forum, the contributions of all of the members involved. It was like watching a fight between your own siblings.
I wanted to express my appreciation to the mods (I think it was Susan and Alpe...possibly more) for not closing the thread and thus allowing it to run its course. I'm hopeful that no parties suffered too greatly as a result.
However, the ban of a member should not be decided on by another member request (at least in the general forum)? I trust that this action was made independently.
