Just an aside - Re-registering as a new user (sock puppet) during a ban is grounds for a permanent ban of all accounts.

This is just a silly comment when it clearly does not happen. I can't say whether that is because there is no appetite to do it, or whether there is a problem that makes it not possible, but come on.

When you have some users who are back with new names within 5 minutes of ban number 45 ..............

Generally speaking, you should fairly expect to receive a warning for behaviour that is likely to lead to a banning if it continues. These are events that are at the fringe of the forum rules and at risk of stepping over them. It is at this point that you have the opportunity to explain/discuss/reverse that behaviour and you will then be assessed upon the reaction to that warning. the warning will be one record and will be taken into account in future situations.

However, where the behaviour blatantly breaks the rules of the forum, a warning is not necessary and should not be expected/demanded. You read the rules when you signed up and so you will know that what you have done has broken them and you will know that a punishment is appropriate. In these cases, I really, truly, deeply, do not care how many supposedly 'nice' posts someone has put up in their time on a site. when someone completely breaks the forum rules regarding offensive behaviour etc they should be assessed on the act itself. The rules should not be biased against Noobs who don't know better. If anything they should be biased AGAINST long term members. After all, they have been on the site long enough to get a very good feel for what is appropriate and what is not.

Well said Marty (any man who advertises that he drives a BMW deserves a silly nickname). That was very well put. I expect that if I cross the line I will go to the box by myself and feel shame. And I would not expect to be able to make a substitution. But I would also expect to be released at some point to rejoin society.

Who is this boredone guy?
aka dimspace aka teamskyfans. Long time member, makes a lot of posts, contributes to threads in many areas of the forum, started and maintains a great Team Sky website, started our TDF fantasy league, has the Union Jack tattooed on his left buttock, Prince Charles on the right, has funny debates with ACF94 even if neither of them is joking, big track fan, good sense of humour but takes things too personally sometimes and is currently in the penalty box. Assuming that's the name of a bar in Paris. He will be welcomed back with open arms.

Actually I think that it clearly DOES happen. The fact that the person you are referring to has been forced to resort to that many new logins indicates that when a sockpuppet is identitied it is banned immediately.

Current policy is to ban the new login AND delete every single post it made AND any post by someone else that references it.

The PROBLEM is that there is a technical failing in site administration that means that it is possible to create the secondary accounts in the first place

well im back, and now im back i finally get the message telling me im banned

Dear TeamSkyFans,
You have received an infraction at CyclingNews Forum.
Reason: Inappropriate Language
-------
You can consider yourself banned for 7 days
-------

This infraction is worth 1 point(s) and may result in restricted access until it expires. Serious infractions will never expire.

trouble is, if you are banned you cant access your pm's so you dont receive the note that youve been banned. Until after you come back from your ban which isnt overly helpful.

Anyway.. Im back, but just a warning.. Any doping talk outside of the clinic even if its in a joke and in no way related to doping, im reporting it :p
And innapropriate language gets a 7 day ban so i intend to be a good law abiding forum member and report all innapropriate language as well.

is there an infraction for reporting lots of posts?

On a serious note, thank you for not deleting my duplicate account, it made me able to at least communicate how annoyed i was by this all. Although of course that was a breach of forum rules. :D

I still say my warning was unfair, i did NOT talk about doping. and although i was used "innapropriate language" i think it was far less innapropriate than much that is used around here, at least i didnt use colour codes etc to get around the censor.

What have i learnt.. erm.. that sometimes when words cross the atlantic they change their meaning from what they were intended, and that moderation is inconsistent. BUt anyway

enough of that.. im ninth in the fantasy league so :p

I notice I now have one point. Can we PLEASE be given a list from moderators of the kind of warning, and what points mean, does 2 pts mean a ban or what. If moderation is to become stricter (which it seems it is) its only fair we know what the rules are that we are playing by.

Yes. There is and it has been enforced recently.

So hang on, if people are talking about doping in the normal forum, and you report lots of posts, you get an infraction? Or if a lot of people are calling each other offensive names and you report lots of people you get an infringment?
Thats hardly encouraging people to report posts is it.

what i would say is look at how you dish out warnings. The current standardised infringement notice is fairly sterile and harsh. NOt everyone on here has english as their first language, and not everybody is fully healthy in the head. What seems fine to some people, may not always be fine to everyone else. I much prefer the personal touch.

Can we PLEASE be given a list from moderators of the kind of warning, and what points mean, does 2 pts mean a ban or what. If moderation is to become stricter (which it seems it is) its only fair we know what the rules are that we are playing by, and what is worthy of receiving infringments and warnings.

I think what Martin means is that people reporting things inaccurately and just "wasting moderators time". We know that you're not allowed to say anything slightly related outside of The Clinic, so I'm sure you're welcome to report any instances of that.

Welcome back.

I am just saying to make sure that you only use the "report post" button when there is actually something worth reporting.

A barrage of post reportings with a reason of "he doesnt agree with me" posts will result in some form of contact from the moderators. A barrage of post reportings about other users that upon inspection are clearly invalid will probably result in some form of warning and continuing could risk suspension.

reporting comments about doping outside the clinic is entirely appropriate.

Where the reports are VALID it doesnt matter how many you create (one per instance though)

Now, where on earth do you think users of this site might have gotten the impression that if they gang up on someone they disagree with and maliciously report their posts, they can get them banned, despite their being no evidence to support their assertions?

Hmmm. Can we think of any precident that might have led them to believe this sort of behaviour is okay and produces result?

Hmmmm?

PS. For what it's worth, loved your dig at the other mods further up for putting up with trolls that abuse and bait people but repeatedly get away with it on this site simply because they have high post counts. You won't be on Susan's or alpe's best buddies list for that one.

Ooh, I am starting to report a lot of posts by Hamperium, as he is just advertising his own pictures. I report every post I come across by him, mainly because he does it in every post. When might I expect my infraction :p

Oh crap, I reported him too. You take the hit on this one and I'll get you back next time. Seriously though - mods - I think I'd rather read an annoying flame war for 30 pages than have some guy pretend to be on topic while linking to his for-profit business. That stuff has to be sorted out right away, it kills the credibility of this place. Maybe you're working on it behind the scenes, but that in my opinion is a "two strikes and yer out" permanent ban offence. 5 points on the dim scale.

I have no problem with you doing that. The case is valid and the number of reportings is appropriate.

What I was talking about is there were a few members who would report anything up to 20 posts every time they logged on and roughly 19 of those were pointless wastes of moderators time.

OK, so if he has multiple usernames then I thought that wasn't allowed? Are multiple accounts only banned if those posters are considered "trolls" by the anti Lance crowd?

This is a pretty confusing place with all of the selective rule enforcement (usually depending on which side of the Lance debate you are on), the multiple accounts, the unable to log in to argue banning, etc. I see there is a thread in this section of the forum of some guy that got banned until after the Tour and people were wondering why because he must not be able to PM. Some say he had multiple accounts as well so what is going on???

I am not aware of any bar in Paris named "Penalty Box". Sounds too American.

Seems you are asking questions - and answering them.

Let me help you - Dimspace was his original account, that they actively asked to discontinue. After a brief period they came back with the TeamSkyFans account, mainly to post on news about Team Sky.

Very few posters get banned - most are a reincarnation of a poster who has been banned numerous times for having multiple accounts.

Nobody,WBT, TheHog would all be from the anti Lance side - all were banned. I can only think of 2 more who have been banned lately and they admitted having 'sockpuppets' with the intent to go back and forth.
