Indeed.
while were at Matti B has been hugely dissapointing, Maaskant etc

These guys have been injured for the majority of the season, what did we really expect?

+1 exactly Timmy i was going to include Maaskant....What about Keukerie from Cofidis?I know he is young but he won quite a lot last season.

There are so many! But I guess I have to narrow it down :(

Lance, one race and that's it! (insert snare drum pare-ump ump)

Back to the real racers, really the Schleckets have been too much in training mode and have not done much, who still remembers their lead out train at L-B-L? How could you forget :D

My immediate reaction is Thor. As the world champion i would have expected to see him at the top of the results sheet a little more often, but then again i think his chances for winning races are limited.

I realise is way past his prime but i would have expected Robbie McEwan to pick up a stage in at least a minor stage race. Also Allan Davis has been lacking from the results sheet.

And yeh LL Sanchez has been way to quite too.

pozzato, devolder, flecha, haussler all did very poorly in their clsssics campaigns.

boonen and hushovd were strong, just not strong enough.

menchov and sastre are old but i still expected more.

schlecks and basso have bet the house on le tour.

lulu has been awful

Why people keep writing pozzato - how many seasons does it take for you to lower your expectations of a rider ?

Disappointing this year ? Disappointing for his career so far - yes, could be so much more, but most disappointing this year no - bog standard pozzato spring

2009 wasn't disappointing.

Of those, I only consider Haussler disappointing.

...
Riders I don't rate anyway (Greipel, Devolder)*
...
*Haussler also fits into this category, but he talks himself up a lot.

Is someone pulling my leg here, cause I find it quite surprising and irritating that some people seem to agree with this sh*t.

Not rating Greipel is silly in my opinion. The guy clearly has a lot of potential and has had a pretty disappointing season so far. Why the hell would you not rate a rider that takes his job serious (Devolder I get) in the first place, seems pretty arrogant to me.

And a major WTF for including Haussler in this category. The guy has shown a lot of crazy performances in the past and has ridden some amazing races. I really find it disturbing that you supposedly don't rate him and I find it even more disturbing that someone like Alpe d'Huez agrees with you.

In the end you don't make any sense, because you find Haussler the most disappointing rider this season, which is pretty wacky if you don't rate him.

I voted Haussler, by far the most disappointing to me.

yeah Greipel made no sense to me either.

Also Menchov was invited to the tour. He knew this a long time ago, his fail at the giro is just poor.

Menchov almost always fails at one GT per season, and he doesn't do much aside from GTs, so I'd wait till the end of the Vuelta to rate his season. It's been pretty Menchovian so far.

OK, I'll explain why I don't really rate them.

Greipel has speed. That is not in doubt to me. However, his positioning and his ability to follow wheels is lousy. You will often see on race threads saying how Greipel was the strongest in the sprint as he came from about 16th to finish 4th. His problem is that he was in 16th in the first place. Without a perfect leadout against weaker opposition, he's not that great, he tends to get lost.

Haussler is harder to put into words but is one of those sportsmen, IMO, who had one golden bit of form where everything went right* (Spring 2009). It's not representative of their general abilities, just a magical aligning of the stars that only happens once. I don't expect it to happen again (but I may be proved wrong). Even then, his two second places in monuments came from jumping away from a bunch of about 30. If he'd come 15th we wouldn't be talking about him.

*It happens in lot's of sport and isn't related to Clinic matters.

That is a valid statement in some regards. I don't think you could say his san Remo was just some luck. He was leading out Thor and just road away, and only cav caught him.. that is pretty impressive after 300km of racing. Also Haussler has acheived more than this. Multiple GT stage winner (that TDF stage was pretty epic... and in 2009, so not just spring?)

And i think we could have expected more this year as he had a similar start to the season as he did in 09 riding well in Qatar. Some of this lack of result would be down to extra pressure and also being more of a marked man.

Andre Greipel for me

He already has 5 victories this season all of them won pretty impressively.

He had a pretty bad crash at T-a which made him miss that + you can't be good in MSR then.

He was also going good at Paris-Roubaix for quite a while...

Greipel shouldn't be judged before the TdF finished. That he can win loads of sh*traces doesn't need to be proven once more. He changed his racing style (see the fantastic wins in De Panne and Tour of Belgium), in Flanders he worked hard for Gilbert. As a allround racer he made a huge leap forward this year.

In July he should show that he's capable of winning really big races.

Still, compared to last year his season has been quite poor. Disappointment mostly comes from unfulfilled expectations. So I understand why people feel that way about him.
