Well, Owl, the type of racing you describe lost out to what we currently have. What we currently have is wildly popularall over the world. What you used to do is an interesting historical footnote.

The Tour is raced to see who is best at the Tour. Same for every other race. The possible exception is the hour record - but that is more of a test than a race.

If you are as passionate as you sound about the type of racing you used to participate in, there is nothing stopping you from starting an organization to promote it. The USA Cycling makes race promotion pretty easy with their standardized insurance forms, licensed race officials, etc.

It's pretty unlikely anything you write here will have an effect on how current pro race courses and formats are organized. You haven't gotten much support at all from other posters on this forum.

So, GO FOR IT. Put your ideas to work and start a race series that fits your ideas and ideals. I think any aspiring yourng racer would be a fan for more opportunities to pin on a number and race. The only thing stopping you from seeing it happen is you.
