"Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that? "

Imho

There is no such thing as "best film / movie / flick", any more than there is a best poem, painting, symphony etc,. There is a "best " category to which many can be (and have been here) named.

.... I did just watch Kurasawa's The Seven Samurai a few days ago and it is right up there. Screen play, cinematography, costume, acting. Deliciously foreign.

We Were Soldiers would be the best war movie I've seen.

Great movie, even better book.

Like most movie categories, it is hard to rank war movies as there have been some very good ones in the past, not including the current bevy of movies based on the Iraqi war. But war movies that I would rate very highly include Apocalypse Now and Black Hawk Down, and maybe Platoon and Saving Private Ryan just to name a few. Although not a movie, Band of Brothers was also excellent.

Riding Giants, footage makes even an non ocean person excited. Dust and Glory when the guy rides his motorcycle 100mph on the beach is liberating.

"The Battle of Algiers", 1965, dir. Gillo Pontecorvo. Sometimers you would think you were reading yesterday's newspaper. About the Algerian war of indepedance against the French who managed somehow to hand off their Indo-china colonial mess to the US. Filmed in a cinema verite style we have the full range of military autrocities and torture, racist mob violence, urban guerillas, suicide bombers and "regular folks" who become radicalized while in prison. As depressing as real war.

A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, 300, Lord of The Rings Trilogy, and The Matrix original came to my mind....

I'm sure there are a lot more if I really give it a thought but I guess that wouldn't be much of a great movie for me since I can't recall it right away. :)

I've been to Algiers many times. One day my driver pointed out this parking lot on the left at the airport as you go thru the first checkpoint, and he said over 1000 people were killed (executed) there in one setting. Not sure of which the multitude of reasons you list above was the culprit.

Although I don't usually like to comment on topics like this because there are so many good films out there, one of my favorites is......

Breaker Morant

Since this is cyclingnews.com, I recommend "Breaking Away", a bicycle themed movie. It's an old movie (1979), but it's a fun coming of age movie.

DUnno if Network or Sling Blade have been mentioned yet, but two fabulous films. And Chinatown was one of the most snubbed movies ever at the Oscars.

Art Carney over Nicholson for best actor.....come on

it was a lifetime award. we all know Jack is one of the all time greats. has he ever be been bad? i have seen a lot of his movies and some are better than others, but he is usually, at least, ok. Chinatown is a classic.
