it was a lifetime award. we all know Jack is one of the all time greats. has he ever be been bad? i have seen a lot of his movies and some are better than others, but he is usually, at least, ok. Chinatown is a classic.

Five Easy Pieces and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are both Nicholson high points and super-excellent movies in their own right.

Something's Gotta Give is the only film by Nicholson that left me turning it off.

Nice point about Carney, never thought of it from that point of view. It is similar to Pacino winning with "Scent of a Woman." Obviously not Pacino's best role, but he needs to win an oscar at least one time in his life.

bahahahaha!

my top 10

1. Empire of the sun
2. on the waterfront
3. American History X
4. Dances with wolves
5. platoon
6. Fight club
7. the Deer Hunter
8. Black hawk down
9. Godfather
10. star wars (IV, V & VI)

I appreciate those films.

I would add Schindler's List in place of Star Wars.

I would place Apocolypse Now in place of Fight Club.

In no order, here are several of my favorites:

Reservoir Dogs
Silence of the Lambs
Wizard of Oz
Fargo
Unforgiven
Ping Pong (Japanese)
Big Lebowski
Munich
Paper Moon

Wow, once you get to recalling, there are so many great films!

Which film were you referring to? I sadly have not seen Scent of a Woman yet, and I forced myself through only the first 25 minutes of Something's Gotta Give

OK, I just got an iPhone and have been playing with all of the apps. One of the apps is the IMDb site and they have their top 250 movies. Here is a link: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top Pretty similar to some of our collective choices, some other interesting ones as well.

Most of the highest ranking films seem to be more recent. Maybe it's an out of sight, out of mind phenomenon. Some older films by some of the mid 20th century masters are still some of the best movies made.

'M' by Fritz Lang is on that list and it has perhaps one of the more powerful final scenes in film. Probably Fritz Lang's best film. 'M' is now a public domain film, so you can watch it on youtube without fear of reprisal. 'M' by Fritz Lang.

"Titicut Follies" B&W documentary I saw in 1967, about treatment (abuse) of criminally insane prisoners in the Massachuttes Correctional Institution in Bridgewater MA. Banned by the MA Supreme Court. I still remember the prisoner having a tube forced down his throat and being force fed. It could have been an important film, if it wasn't so embarassing to the State.

Also in 1967, "Portrait of Jason", by Shirley Clarke. A 12 hour "discussion" with an African American gay hustler, distilled into about 90 minutes. as one critic said, "For Jason is a chameleon/hustler/shapeshifter/trickster/thespian/vagabond/dreamer/houseboy/tragicomic/sham/male *****/stoned *****/consummate bull**** artist whose sleight of hand will always put him just outside your grasp." Its beyond category. See it if you can.

So I just watched L.A. Confidential, easily the best movie I've seen in the past few years.

All aspects are flawless, I recommend to all.

Bladerunner might be the best movie ever made in my opinion. I cry everytime I see it when the scene comes where Roy dies on the roof. (And I never cry, never!! :D)

The best movie I have seen in the last 12 months has to be Zombieland.
I highly recomend it, kinda low-budget and bad-taste humour but I laughed so hard!

The "doped bike" videos made me remember this....

"Blowup", 1966
8wy0io.jpg

London fashion photog take pics in park, thinks he sees something, keeps enlarging the images until he's convinced he has photographed a murder, or did he? A must see. Be warned, do NOT watch this is you find images of naked young model-wannabes offensive. Close your eyes whenever Vanessa Redgraves nude body parts are shown. (To think I was a teenager then and still a ...... inexperienced person.)

Wow, you liked it! :p I absolutely couldn't stand this movie when I saw it some years ago. A photographer friend recommended it so I bought a posh edition and hated every moment.

I don't think it was the "wannabe" angle as you put it (good phrase) that bothered me so much as practically every scene being suffused with a near-brutal inner coldness. It gave me the same sort of creepy feeling as watching Ang Lee's The Ice Storm.

Totally respect your take though. Funny how films polarise opinions! :)
