Sports Films- At the risk of sounding like a complete d**k, does a sports film automatically have to be sentimental mush? If not, then I would like to put in a good word for the work of Ron Shelton, himself a former minor league baseball player. He wrote and directed "Bull Durham", "White Men Can't Jump", and "Tin Cup". He also wrote the screenplay for "The Best of Times", an overlooked 1986 film starring Kurt Russell and Robin Williams (before he devoted himself almost exclusively to 'sentimental mush') about 30-something small towners who want to re-play the 'big game' they lost their senior year. It was favorably compared to classic Preston Sturges comedies. I haven't heard much from Shelton in recent years but I'm holding out hope that he'll turn his sights to the cycling world next. Perhaps a film about an earnest, flawed young man with an old-fashoined name and a sheltered upbringing who stands up against a golden boy sociopath. That screenplay could just about write itself, eh? :p

Others sports films I've enjoyed over the years include "The Bad News Bears", "Breaking Away", "Slap Shot", "North Dallas Forty", and that Farrelly Brothers movie about pro bowlers with Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray, the name of which escapes me right now.

By the way, I'm a real stickler for grammar, but putting quotes around all those titles was a real pain in the a**. I may have to rethink that in the future.

How about this for an intriguing sub-category- "Chick Flicks that aren't just for Chicks"? :D

Tread carefully, guys, this one's a minefield. ;)

"High Tide"- a 1988 Gillian Armstrong film starring Judy Davis as a vagabond who, while stranded in a coastal town in Australia, runs into her former mother-in -law and soon realizes the teen-age girl she's raising is the infant she abandoned after her husband tragically died. Thus, the awkward bonding moments begin.

"Sixteen Candles"- They caught lighting in a bottle on this one as it was pretty much downhill after this for John Hughes and most of his cast, except for the Cusack siblings, of course.

"All the Real Girls"- a 2003 David Gordon Green film ("Pineapple Express", "Eastbound and Down") starring Zooey Deschanel and Paul Schneider as mis-matched lovers in a small town in the mountains of western North Carolina. I saw this at the Fine Arts Theatre in Asheville, NC and I got a real kick when I saw this establishment mentioned in the "The producer would like to thank" credits at the end.

"The English Patient"- I know "Seinfeld" made it cool to dump on this picture, but I still think it's one of the best romantic epics ever- a film David Lean only wishes he could have made. Also, I've always loved me some Kristen Scott Thomas and it was impressive to see Ralph Fiennes bounce back from playing a fat Nazi (By which I mean "Schindler's List", not "The Rush Limbaugh Story". That one's for you, Glenn Wilson :p).

"The Fabulous Baker Boys"- the Bridges Brothers are lounge musicians who are thrown for a loop after Michelle Pfeiffer's sultry singer enters the picture. (Yikes, that description sounds like the beginning of a Gene Shalit review.).

"Titanic"- sure, the dialogue is often painful, but, come on, "They're on a boat, a mother- f***ing boat!".

I think the movie was called "King Pin" - also starred Randy Quaid.

That is an underrated, unseen film. The look at the town of Taft was reality. The back story actually had meaning to it beyond what was on the surface. Good find.

Did i mention "Silkwood"?
Another film with a real slice of reality. It captured the simple life of Oklahoma, and some of the scenes are quite frightening.

From your picks, Sixteen Candles was fun as a youth, as was Pretty in Pink. as just like every other teenager then I had a crush on Molly Ringwold. But are those chick flicks? Titanic was...titanic! Is Blue Crush a chick flick? How about Heathers? Ghost was a chick flick, right? It was okay. What about Lost in Translation?

Looking at those, I'm not sure they're chick flicks. Heathers was wacky dark humor. Titanic was an action movie with a gorgeous Kate Winslet in it. I liked Blue Crush because it had hot babes surfing in bikinis. Ghost had a beautiful Demi Moore, and Lost in Translation had a beautiful Scarlett Johansson.

Any guy here who mentions a Hugh Grant movie...

When Brad Pitt pulled out that knife for the first time in "Inglourious Basterds", the first thought that popped into my mind was, "Oh sweet! He's gonna circumsize this Nazi f***er!!". Then he proceeds to carve a swastika into his forehead. Really Quentin? Is that the best you could come up with?

Ok....other than not being even remotely scared of Alpe any more;)...I haven't seen if anyone has mentioned Sergio Leone yet....sorry I am completely ignoring the Chick Flick passages...

Once upon a time in the west....in america....others on my must have seen list...Untouchables....Three Colours....Cinema Paradiso....A Prophet (French Prison film)...Alan Clarke's Scum...both hard to watch but utterly compelling.....Memento....Fight Club....Oh I knew i shouldnt have started this...

ok one chick flick...Amelie...ok one more...truly madly deeply

p.s...pretty in pink and fast times...hell yeah! And for the ultimate surf film...surely Point Break...well not techincally a "surf" film...more an eighties study in mullet appreciation and high waistbands...but it was set on a beach!

It's a brilliant movie.

That's definitely a surfing film, and better than Blue Crush (even with the babes in bikinis). It may not have the same complete surfer lifestyle that Big Wednesday had (my pick for best surfing film!) and it's not The Endless Summer, but Point Break had a great mix of action, adventure, cops and robbers, and surfing. The final scene shows how true to the sport it was.

I know i´ll get abused now: ;)

I just watched "Inception". It is terrible BS. But it´s clever done by Warner: Leave the end open or to be interpreted differently by the individuals. Then it´s easy get the people in for part 2, 3, 4...

It´s just for milking money out of the people.

It´s not that i don´t like good SciFi (12 Monkeys, Matrix part 1, for example were great movies with great stories), but this isn´t only bad ending, it´s unlogic, boring and complete nonsense. What a waste of money. I should have not listen to the good critics the movie got. Had i followed my instinct, i wouldn´t have spend money for this pathetic crap.

Try without your pathetic german sync and use subtitles instead... ;) It's a great movie. Not 'that great' as it was hyped to be, but great.

You don't like Shutter Island as well then? Don't tell me you don't like Shutter Island.

While I quite liked Inception because of its layers and intrigue, a movie I had a similar reaction to you with Inception was No Country For Old Men. Good movie ... yes, but not worth all the hype and hoopla IMO.

Shutter Island is great. The best movie i saw last year. And the end is perfect. It´s logic and surprising. Just wow.

My biggest disapointment was a film by danish director Lars Von Trier. Some mental illed woman dies because she tries to satisfy her sick husband. Breaking the wawes i think its called.
