My biggest disapointment was a film by danish director Lars Von Trier. Some mental illed woman dies because she tries to satisfy her sick husband. Breaking the wawes i think its called.

Yes it is Breaking the waves. Starring Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard.
How do you mean you were disapointed, you watched some von Trier's movies and didn't like this one or you had high expectations based on critcs?

IMHO: That is one hell of a movie, 100% von Trier, but my opinion is biased because I love his movies, Dancer in the dark, Idioterne, Europa, Melancholia... and of course Dogville.

The "Deer Hunter" is in my top ten favorites.
It was filmed in the neighborhood I live in.
Went up to the hall everyday to watch them film.
For lunch they used to have a buffet set up for cast and crew, when they had their fill we were able to sit down and enjoy a meal:D
One of my friends still has one of those folding canvass directors chairs;)
Somehow mysteriously showed up in his garage.

Dogville is great i agree with that one. But with Breaking the Waves, it received good critics and my friends who had watched it said it was good, definately a must see. But i was like "I get the idea she's mentally sick, that she have strong religious belief beyond sanity. But why let her die because of that?" Thats just sick in my humble opinion.

I haven't had a lot of time for films in my adult years. Which is why all my candidates for "best" are films I first saw and loved as a teen. I guess I was a pretty serious teen, because all these films are great. I appreciate them even more now.

One thing they all have in common is that they demand to be seen on the large screen. It's tempting to say that if you can't see them on the large screen, you shouldn't even bother. But if we say that, they won't be seen at all, probably. Anyway, the nominees are:

Fellini Satyricon

8 1/2

Ingmar Bergman's Persona

This has to be the most pretentious and condescending post I've ever seen on this forum. Your arrogance is astonishing.

Anyway, I am glad Nowhereman wrote that comment since of course the title of this thread is totally stupid and somebody had to say it.
That being said there are a few movies that have made a lasting impression on me, among them
Midnight cowboy
and
One flew over the cookoo(?)'s nest
Others that I enjoy far less the 2nd time around than the 1st, like No country for old men

And then there is
Le père Noël est une ordure
I could watch it 20 times and laugh my heart out each time.
The same goes (watch 20 times, except I would skip 1 scene, too hard to watch) for
Les valseuses, but for different reasons.

Well, I'll leave it at that.
And thanks to Nowhereman for his outstanding contribution to BoB :)

I work in TV. Make all the lists, threads, comments you want on TV. I don't mind. It's a message board on the internet! I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T.

That said, I can change the title to "your favorite movies ever" or "Some of the Best Movies Ever" or something like that, if anyone is really that bugged by it.

Don't bother. All the rest of us here, but one, understand what this thread's about. I did agree with one thing the film industry worker (who's obviously not a PR person) said though, that all of us are very different.

Whilst on the topic of space SciFi films, one movie I strongly do not recommend: APOLLO 18.
It wasn't THAT bad! I thought they had a good idea, it started off well. They got the look and feel all right. But the whole concept was implausible, and when you thought about it afterward you realized a lot of plot holes (like, how did the supposedly found footage get back home?). But I've seen plenty worse sci fi films. Their budget was like $5 mil. Compare this film to Battlefield Earth. The Phantom Menace (or any SW prequel), the Matrix sequels. Alien vs. Predator? All those films had huge budgets and big names, and were far worse than Apollo 18.

Haha! As I was writing my 'review' in my earlier post about Apollo 18, the thought 'low budget film' crossed my mind. But you are right about one thing at least... the film did not start off THAT bad and had the right feel in the beginning. But it went south in a hurry when the implausible reared its ugly head, that being the rock spiders or some dang parasite thing.

Since we will never be able to answer the question, I'll just go on with the nominees. :D

Two classic movies, no computers, no tricks - but just epic and bombastic nevertheless.

Ben Hur

Back in the 80's people spoke of them as rivals, but I guess they were both always fans of each others films. Glad they're finally doing something together.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. Not everything could, or should be a Merchant-Ivory film. And plenty of us like both serious, and fun films. It is called the entertainment business, after all.

Here's the photo in question:

Name of this thread is: "Did you catch a Great movie lately" and all the talking lately is about Sly Stallone and Rocky Balboa. Must be some misunderstanding around these parts about the meaning of the word "GREAT" because Stallone and Balboa don't fit into the same sentence with GREAT and make for a coherent statement. Unless the object is to describe a GREAT Big Mess.
The punishment for this confusion should be that Rocky fans should be strapped down, and forced to watch "The Artist" one of this years "great" films. A very interestingly different cinematic experience, that is quite a tribute to Hollywood and the coming of age, of cinema.

While Stallone might capture the hearts of many, and I don't mean to sully his name, thought provoking is not a description of his style of film making. And "lately" was part of the question wasn't it??
Please check with the Academy, and it's Oscar winners for Late, Great films. While their picks are not always perfect, they have a fairly decent record. And I agree enthusiastically with their picks this year Oh, and while you're at it you might go see another movie that is along the same theme: Hugo. (and see it in 3D) Another nostalgic look at the ever changing world of film making, and it's reflection on many of us. Enjoy:)

@ nowhereman - that's a bit harsh! I actually think Stallone has made some very good movies, the first and last Rockies and Copland are three of his movies that immediately come to mind. As you eluded to in your previous post, success at the Oscars does not mean a movie is great (No Old Country For Old Men is a good example) and a lack of success does not mean that a movie is not great. Then you heap on personal opinions to the mix and what is great for you may not be great to the next person. Sly and Arnie's movies have had an impact on movie making and led their genre for a long time, so they must be doing something right even though their movies are not for everyone or every age.

don't you like it? In my opinion No Country for old Men is a great movie

but in general you are right, often it's just about social (and/or political reasons), like Denzel Washington and Halle Berry being awarded in the same year (more or less just for being black) or Crash getting the Oscar for thematizing recent social problems.

Or sometimes they are just overdue of receiving an award, like Scorsese getting all that Oscars for Departed just for being passed over for his much better movies. Don't get me wrong, Departed isn't as bad as Crash, but getting an award for Best Adapted Screenplay must have been a joke as it was just a one-to-one remake of Infernal Affairs

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is another example. I am quite sure it was nominated for and won so many awards because it was the last of the trilogy, and hence representative of the trilogy, than for the movie by itself. The movie was good, but was it really any better than The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers?
