Group rides need a mud flap out of courtesy for the person behind you. I have been able to mount full fenders on most any road race bike. Full fenders are hard to mount as they usually need lots of brackets and modifications to make them fit For solo riding the mud guards and full wrap are just for your own comfort.

Those SKS Raceblades are nice but they're still no match for a proper full-coverage fender. Though it's hard to mount full fenders to a race bike, it's not impossible and a job well done will make riding in nasty conditions far, far more tolerable.

Do a Google search for River City Bicycles' 'Reacharound' fender mounts. I don't think they're still in production but you should be able to see what they've done by looking at these images:
