I just discovered right now that he passed away on 26 March 2017 at age 92! I feel saddened that there was no real news report about that. Alessandro Alessandroni was the guitar player and a master whistler on all the major western films by Sergio Leone and hence the driving force behind Ennio Morricone's success. I wish I could speak Italian to understand what Ennio is saying in the intro on the link I shared.

Alessandroni could play the guitar but also the mandolin, the saxophone, the sitar (one of the first musicians to do so in Italy apparently), the accordion, the piano... Nino Rota wanted him in his orchestra.
