Two great songs: the first became the most famous biker's song and was covered numerous times, while the second with it's ambiguous lyrics (Eric Clapton describes it as an anti-drug song but you still may hear what you want to) and thrilling riff became one of the best songs by one of the all-time greatest guitarists:

Steppenwolf - Born to be wild

Eric Clapton - Cocaine

Cocaine is a JJ Cale song.. EC does nothing to it of note..

as well as "I Shot the Sheriff" is Bob Marley song. but what is common between these two songs is the fact that cover versions (by EC) were more popular than the original ;)

edit:

Bob Marley - I Shot The Sheriff

Eric Clapton - I Shot the Sheriff

True but popularity doesn't make EC telling what it is about or the sound of the guitar licks his. The JJ Cale version was popular enough that EC should have left it alone. I am sure there are Bob Marley fans who feel the same way about I shot the sheriff

Reminds me of people saying.. "don't let it bring you down" is the best song Annie Lennox ever wrote..

i understand your point, imo EC was supposed to do that (tell what it's about) because not doing so he might be accused of a drug promotion.

I guess Annie Lennox might get an exception considering the difference in time, but there are many fairly well known songs covered by bigger named artists that may not do the song justice compared to the original, yet people fawn over them like they have never heard the songs before, and many times they haven't..

Tom Petty did this and it surely outsold the original

also better than the later cover

Earlier (about 1-2 month ago) i've posted representatives of the modern Australian hard rock - the band called Wolfmother and completely forgot  about the other Aussie band which fills this criteria.
So, Airbourne - an Aussie band formed by two brothers Joel (lead guitar, vocals) and Ryan (drums) O'Keeffe with a music generally called "rock n roll" - that makes a comparison with AC/DC pretty inevitable, though apart from AC/DC Airbourne's music is quite influenced by such bands as Rose Tattoo or Motorhead. Comparing to Wolfmother Airbourne is more metal sounded, but whether it is good or bad depends on the personal taste.
So, one of my favourite bands of the 21 century ;):

Airbourne - Diamond in the Rough

Airbourne - No Way But The Hard Way

Airbourne - Runnin' Wild
