been listening to a lot of jazz just lately, Miles, Coltrane Hank Mobley and a whole load of Blue Note stuff, but had a bit of a diversion into Prog, Caravan Soft Machine, Camel and Gong

Rökkurró "Svanur"

This is one of those hipsterish tales, but I'd never heard of this band until I was in Iceland. I went in 12Tónar, a famous record shop in Reykjavík down the road from Hállgrimskirkja, and this song was playing on the turntable. I bought it straight off there. There's a lot of beautiful atmospheric music coming out of Iceland, but the bit at 3:49 hit and just blew me away more than anything else.

Thanks for sharing. I love it when I don't understand the lyrics (or when there are no lyrics at all) so I can focus on the melody, in this case, from both piano and voice. Beautiful. Got any other sounds from the Land of Fire and Ice to share?

For something a bit different, I leave you with the second movement from Schubert's Piano Trio in E-flat major: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKZBmMu06Fg Better sound with headphones.

Also

Stáfrænn Hákon "Unnar"

Amiina "What are we Waiting For?"

Ólafur Arnalds "And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness" (just the full album. No point in picking specific tracks)

Rökkurró "Skuggamyndir"

It's not all ethereal though.

Dead Skeletons "Dead Mantra"

Purrkur Pillnikk "Augun Úti" (I wanted to post "Fullkomun" but can't find a video for that. This is Einar Örn pre-Sugarcubes)

Tappi Tikarrass "Hrollur" (this is Björk pre-Sugarcubes. She's about 16 here)

Also, Iceland's biggest punk record by far, Vonbrigði "Ó Reykjavík"

My fave classical piece, ever since I've seen this masterpiece: Barry Lyndon. Actually made me love classical music.

Rien ne va plus. Faites vos jeux. :)

Should be my funeral song. :D

Eh! It really is great. I have Barry Lyndon but never seen it. I will now. :)

I'm not sure if it would fit as a funeral song - It gives the chills but it's not sad enough. :p

You'll love it, mate. ;) If only for the music. I think the music accounts for 50% of a film's success, at least.

Especially Murray Melvin in the reverend's role is amazing. His eyes, lol. Kubrick's best for me. His biggest commercial flop, I think, which shows how good it is. :p

For a funeral song, I also thought of Ennio Morricone - C'era una volta il West (finale) Don't know if it's sad enough. If not, then Elvis' Jailhouse Rock would do. :D

Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black

The first Jóhannsson track is extremely powerful. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Musically, that was beautiful. The digital vocals totally ruined it for me, though, I'm afraid, it really took me out of it.

her "Without Sinking" from a few years ago is probably the touchstone of her body of work

Somewhat more brooding and melancholy than what Libertine listed, but no less beautiful for it.

That was amazing.
