I'm a 23-year-old male (5'10'', 165lbs) avid road cyclist and have been riding hard for about a year and a half. Before that I was a lightweight rower for seven years. About four months ago, I started suffering from a nagging pain in my ankle. It came on slowly, and I noticed it mostly when sprinting and climbing (out of the saddle.) At the time, I was riding about 100 miles
on the weekends, 20-40 miles throughtout the week after work, and also doing some running during the week. As the ankle pain slowly worsened, I decided to stop running, thinking this was the cause (I've never done very high volume running more than 20 miles per week.) I had also been suffering from shin splints on the posterior side of my tibialis (both legs.) After a couple of weeks of lighter riding and no running, the ankle pain got bad enough that I decided to stop riding. After a couple of weeks rest, the pain returned with minimal effort on the bike.

I have been experiencing pain in the inside of my ankle, and also a burning pain on the side of the arch towards my heel. I have no problem raising up onto my toes, but if I lean my weight onto the outside of my foot with my heel raised, it produces the worst pain in my inner ankle. Also, jogging even a few steps hurt.

I got an appointment with a podiotrist who said that it was an "overuse injury" (obviously) and had some orthotic inserts made for me. They arrived after three weeks and I started wearing them at all times. I have now had them for about five weeks, and the pain has generally lessened over time. I can now jog short distances without pain, and it doesn't hurt as much as it used to if I put my weight on the outside of the ball of my foot. However, after riding with any kind of effort on the trainer, the pain gets worse again.

It is killing me not being able to train on my bike and I am very fruststerated! Can anyone help me?

Do some research to find who is the best custom fit specialist in your area.

Have an evaluation performed by a chiropractor, physiotherapist, or orthopedic specialist.

Take the results of the evaluation to the fit specialist and have him/her perform a bike fit.

Reduce your intensity of training after the fit to allow your body to adapt to the new position.

Work with a coach to develop a training plan to increase your intensity and frequency of training.

Best wishes,

Dave

If you are in the Denver area, let me know and i will perform the evaluation for you.

That's the e-mail address of a colleague of mine who practices in Charleston. She and her husband, Matt Jenkins, are excellent doctors.

Contact them for an evaluation. It is likely to be beneficial.

Let me know...

I know this is an old thread but, this is exactly the issue I’m having right now and can’t find any other resources on this exact issue. Could you tell me if and how you fixed your ankle pain?

There are many reasons for ankle pain. You first need to find out why your ankle is having pain. If it is not easing up with the normal medicines and home remedies like having a warm bath, you must consult a doctor for proper treatment.
