I officially declare Nairo Quintana the most gifted climber since Pantani. I'm considering to put him in my avatar. The only problem is that wouldn't go with my screen name, except if you see Quintana as Pantani's reincarnation. (Which he can't be, because they were alive at the same time.)

He is the second coming of Pantani, you don't need to have not lived at the same time as a rider to be a second coming of them. ;)

The Colombian president celebrating Quintana's win.

Juan-Manuel-Santos-008.jpg

Great reaction to it back in Colombia.

“Today is a historic day for Colombia,” said the president, Juan Manuel Santos, wearing a pink button-down shirt, after joining throngs of fans to watch the last stage of the Giro on a giant television screen set up outside Quintana’s family home in the small mountain-top town of Cómbita. “We are very proud,” he said.

Espn Latin America commentary of the sprint stage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCl6LnoqBMw

They don't give a **** about the sprint :D Treat the 3k to go line as the end of the race counting down to it, shouting "somos Campiones" and basically just shouting that and "Vamos Nairo, Vamos Rigo" for the whole last 5k, only briefly mentioning Mezgec after he won.

The guy is Argentinian. He is not even Colombian. The Colombian commentator on Being was not that excited. Go figure!

According to "El Espectador" newspaper, Nairo is "enamored" of the Giro-which lead us to believe he will compete in it in the future. :)

Personally it makes me glad to know he's not going to obsess/concentrate on Le Tour from now on & he will likely do the races "he wants to" - like Bernard Hinault in the past:)

The Guardian article said one of the news channels dedicated 40 minutes out of an hour news broadcast to the Giro.

Also that Bogota's bars were packed to watch it.

Sometimes they exagerate those things though, still would be cool to see.

A shame the final stage was a sprint though. It would have been a better spectacle for everyone who tuned in for the final stage if they had got to see him personally tt his advantage to the finish like they used to do.

In Guatemala, one of the leading football commentators imitates Argentinian accent, supposedly because of the position Argentina has in Spanish-speaking Latin America in the sport. It's hilarious, although I think he himself is serious about it. Don't know why a Colombian would imitate Argentinian accent in cycling though, or maybe he was a substitute and his main field is football :)

Mario Sabato. He's argentinian from a track cycling family.

In the article from CN there is only a part of this great interview.Enjoy
http://www.biciciclismo.com/cas/site/noticias-ficha.asp?id=72242

Most important parts if you dont have time to read it completely are here:
Estamos en junio, a mitad de la temporada, ?ahora que es lo proximo?
Ahora se trata de descansar un poco y comenzar a preparar la Vuelta Espana.

?El Tour no entra en ningun caso en sus planes?
No, este ano no. He venido exigiendome desde enero que gane San Luis, luego fui muy regular, segundo en Tirreno-Adriatico, quinto en Catalunya y el remate del Giro...Ahora necesitamos un poco de descanso.

Some nice information if you speak spanish:

http://www.eltiempo.com/bocas/nairo-quintana-en-entrevista-con-la-revista-bocas/13630275

He has repeated several times that he hates when the media says that he comes from a poor family or that he was poor when growing up. He says that he had everything in life and in the table. That he didn't need anything else. His father made sure that he didn't need anything else.

One last comment. 7 watts/kilo. They just didn't say the length of time of the test but I assume it was around 1 hour. Of course these are lab conditions. It would be impossible to do that on the road. That is like a nameplate horsepower for a machine. Then you have to apply efficiency and the road conditions. Even with all that they knew at a young age they had a rough diamond. And a very expensive one.:)

No cre?an. Y yo no dec?a nada.

Yo dije: ??Qu? bonito!?.

We are talking about VO2 max territory of 91-93 mL/(kg?min). Maybe some experts can shed some light on this.

Obviously when they did the test for sure he was not on the program because nobody had a clue. Not even him.:)
