Any voice from Quintana and Movi on the rest day.?
Not much (external).
He's right speaking about time deficit.
It isn't much, but he's behind.
Froome won't have to pull in "mano a mano".

after leaving the press conference some journalists swear they heard evil giggling from movistar camp and a lightning striked in the distance...the surprise came from the fact it was a sunny day
Lightning in the distance... From the clear blue Sky, you're saying?
Just a leisure rest day ride.
And giggling... You can't win the Tour from a broom.

Can't wait for Mont Ventoux, round 2. Could be that we'll finally get an epic duel between two closely matched climbers, by far the best in the world, up an iconic climb on which they have history.

I don't think they will both go too deep with TT day after, going off Froome's comments today.
What did the dawg say?

If he didn't feel he was able to put serious time into Froome, it was absolutely the right thing not to attack on Arcalis, regardless of what next 2 weeks will bring. Right now he is close enough to Froome and everybody is guessing how strong he really is, while nobody actually knows it. Whether he is strong enough to win the Tour in the end remains to be seen, but right now he is strategically in very good position.

The waiting game is frustrating to watch, but in the end Nairo is in France to win the Tour, not to entertain people. I obviously prefer more attacking riding style, but if that is what it takes to beat Froome and Sky, then so be it. Sometimes entertainment is clearly of secondary importance.

Nairo is a huge question mark at this moment, nobody knows what his best card is...

I believe he is very confident about his third week, but an attack on Ventoux is a "must", that day all cards shall be opened and the TT next day will be an "empty tank" show up. Nairo has to attack but he must wait Sky to work before last 10k, maybe an attack from Anacona can make it in order to bridge him to the end, the big problem for Nairo is Henao, he can bring back everybody before releasing Froome on last 2k.

Attacks from domestiques on Ventoux ramp would be suicidal, so they have to send some guy in the early breakaway, but Sky can do the same thing, so they have to make a big gap in the beginning and let Valverde work for Nairo starting the ramp, releasing him on last 8k in order to make Anacona wait for him for last 5k.

That's wishful thinking, but I don't know which cards has Froome and Sky team.

Froome aware of Quintana's glorious Giro winning move
Once we were at the top it was descending in that midst and not being able to see what was going on. I imagine it was a little like how it must have felt in the Giro a couple of years ago, when Quintana slipped off the front – so I was trying to keep an eye on him."

i really like that nairo keeps calm and defensive at this point of the race. i think it is wise to learn from history (2 times 2nd is huge achievement) and try to optimize it. compared to last year he is down only some 20s,not 2 (2015) or 4(2013) minutes. to my mind this conservative approach is better then completely change preparation and race tactics.
It is known froome suffers in week 3 while nairo can rely on his endurance. i think he should NOT go all out in ventoux. he rather follow froomes wheel and limit the losses in the ITT. i think GC wise it will all come down to the last mountain stages. Joux plane is known to be a monster after 3 weeks of pain.

Like you I have a feeling that should Froome attack on Ventoux Quintana would just follow him and sprint for the victory in the end. For some reason I think that Quintana doesn't want to spend too much unnecessary energy before 37km TT.

what means spend unnecessary energy? if nairo feels an opportunity to make up time, he should come to the fore and attack right on ventoux. where's a guarantee of froome weakening in week 3 once again..tomorrow is going to unleash the form of big duo. :)

Riding conservatively works both ways, you can conserve energy but you also reduce your opportunities to make up time. It's a gamble because what if Froome has one day in the third week where he is stronger than Quintana ? It means earlier opportunities may have been wasted. I don't think Quintana can afford to wait for the third week. The next two stages are important especially if Froome puts more time into Quintana.

And if some further opportunities are taken away, it still does not become true by assertion that he'd have gained rather than lost with an attack there.

Nairito EXTREMELY lucky here to lose barely 12" as Froome deserved a lot more from this legendary ride. Should thank the cycling gods on his bare knees.

Btw, this reminds me when Ryo said Quintana is better in the wind than Froome, lol.

If Kristoff and that other Katusha guy had managed to bridge, that 12 seconds would have been closer to 35

The thing is, racing conservatively might be his only path to victory against Froome and a super strong Sky. Obviously, he might still lose, but probably would lose by a larger margin, and without an option to win, if he did what so many fans are asking him to do.

Agreed. Unless Froome can maintain this ridiculous form for three weeks, which is pretty questionable, I think this is still Quintana's race to lose. He knows that he has the ability to put time on Froome in the third week, and is even stronger this year than previous editions. If Froome does maintain this form, it's irrelevant. Quintana couldn't win whatever he tried.

It is not as binary a choice as that. 35 seconds of accumulated small losses to Froome's non-traditional attacks introduce a sort of ambiguity, as does the loss of a major MTF. Quintana could be the strongest in the mountains and still lose. He could drop Froome cleanly and only gain 30 seconds. And that's without taking into account possible TT losses which he would also have to make up. He could drop Froome cleanly in two stages, ride away from him twice and still end up behind. That wouldn't be inevitable, it would be a loss that his conservatism contributed to.

Especially lucky when you take into account that Movistar deliberately only took one real big lump flatland specialist. They were entirely dependent on Quintana clinging on without help to a bunch being pulled by sprinters teams.

Today's stage could easily have been a total disaster for him.

But what exactly could Quintana have done to prevent Froome gaining time today or in Luchon? I don't really see how he could prevent that. Look at Froome's form at the moment - the power he has available. Do you think Quintana had any realistic chance of dropping him on a climb as gentle as Arcalis, or attacking a big group on the Peyresourde and staying away on the descent?

What do you know...Quintana can use echelons as an excuse again. Deserved to lose 2 minutes, what a mistake from him. When will he learn...
