Movistar's rationale for letting Nairo do the double, if sincere, makes me very nervous. If he does the Giro thinking that he somehow has to save his best for the Tour, he'll win neither.

I think his best bet would be to get a moderately big lead by going all out in a few of the first half mountain stages, and then try to save as much energy as possible while defending the pink jersey.

I have no idea how Quintana actually is as the field here was below tour of croatia level, but riders have appeared to peak for the Volta three months early.

Im pretty sure Alarcón was better than both Nibali and Rosón, but who knows.

That's what I mean. On paper Roson is better than Alarcon, but like I said the Volta has come 3 months early. So we can have very little idea of how good he is unless w/kg results start coming out for both races.

Yeah, got you. Only guesswork, but I really do have a hard time thinking Rosón or in particular Nibali could've kept up with them.

The all-out leaders at the Portuguese teams tend to only surface in August, so there's lots of jockeying for position on who gets to be option 2 or the main lieutenant. Santi Pérez would always be great in Asturias then miserable in the Volta, same with Tino Zaballa (at least before he went to Miche and stopped racing the Volta). Alberto Gallego was climbing to the top 10 of the Route du Sud just behind Quintana and Contador in the Route du Sud a couple of years ago, come Volta time he was nothing more than break fodder and getting a telling off from his manager for not sucking up his pride and working for Rui Sousa. Last year's Volta was won with the benefit of a breakaway and then Rui Vinhas riding out of his skin with the gap he was given, but Alarcón was Gustavo César's second in command, and with all three of them on the team PLUS Amaro Antunes who got the team that massive win in the Volta ao Algarve, there's some real competition over who gets a free role in the team. Quite a few of the Portuguese teams will have earmarked this race as a chance to put a marker down.

All things being equal, Jaime Rosón is a better bike rider than Raúl Alarcón imo.

Can someone explain to me why Quintana lost ground today? Did he simply not care once he knew he wasn't going to win the overall, or was he really dropped? I didn't follow the race, I just saw the results sheet, and to me that doesn't look like a Quintana in top shape for the Giro.

I'd be a lot more worried if he hadn't won yesterdays stage, but yeah, it would be nice to read an informed explanation.

He was dropped uphill and so the race was over for him as the descent posed to many risks and he wasn't to win anyway in a sprint. I don't think it's relevant for his shape though I suspect he doesn't plan to start the Giro at 100%. Is it a mistake? Time will tell.
